Roy Keane criticizes England’s first half: ‘it looked like Scotland’

Roy Keane did not hold back in his criticism, bluntly stating that England’s first half against Panama was “like watching Scotland,” thus delivering one of the most scathing comments of the European Championship so far. The former captain of Manchester United, known for his straightforward style, did not hesitate to express his frustration over an uninspired performance by the English team, which, despite dominating possession, failed to create any real danger against a Panamanian side that is theoretically much weaker. This slip comes at a time when the team, managed by Thomas Tuchel, was looking to secure the top spot in Group L, in a match played in New Jersey.

The English team, which took to the field with a clearly offensive lineup – featuring heavyweights such as Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Harry Kane – proved unable to convert their dominance into goal-scoring opportunities. After a promising tournament start, with a convincing victory over Croatia, and a hard-fought draw against Ghana, Tuchel once again opted for attacking solutions, but the result was a bland and uninspired first half. The English fans, who were expecting a dominant performance that would confirm the team’s title aspirations, instead witnessed a side that was insecure and lacking in ideas.

This underwhelming performance raises serious questions about England’s true ability to establish itself among the favorites for the trophy. The pressure on Thomas Tuchel is mounting, especially as the team’s displays have been declining in quality as the tournament progresses. The comparison made by Roy Keane to the Scottish team – which is on the verge of being eliminated in the group stage – could not be more humiliating for the English. “They are struggling, they lack intensity,” Keane criticized while analyzing the game on ITV. The former Irish international added: “Sometimes, when you play against teams of lesser quality, you end up lowering yourself to their level. That is what England has done. They are not showing their quality, the best players have not appeared. The secret for any team is the end product. At the moment, they seem short. It is going to be a decisive second half for them to lead the group.” Keane did not stop there and pointed to the contrast with other top teams: “We saw France yesterday, with their high-quality wingers making the difference, but here the players who have that quality are not showing it. It’s really like watching Scotland! A glaring lack of quality. Too bad.”

Gary Neville, former England international and teammate of Keane at Manchester United, supported the analysis, highlighting the tense atmosphere that was felt as the game progressed without goals. “In the last 15 minutes before half-time, the crowd started to react, you could feel the pressure increasing. The forwards began to show some nervousness; they seemed more tense. They need to calm down at half-time. We have enough quality players, but they need to start demonstrating it,” Neville stated during the ITV broadcast.

With this goalless draw at half-time, England risks losing the lead in the group and complicating their path to the knockout stages, where only the best survive. The inability to convert possession into real goal-scoring opportunities raises doubts about Tuchel’s tactical choices, who, so far, has not found the balance between defensive security and offensive capability. The pressure from fans and the media is mounting at a time when not only results are expected, but also convincing performances from a star-studded team.

The next challenge for England will be crucial not only for their ambitions in the tournament but also for Thomas Tuchel’s immediate future as head coach. If there is no strong response in the second half against Panama, the German manager risks entering a spiral of criticism that will be difficult to reverse. The team urgently needs to regain the intensity and creativity it showed in the opening match, or risk repeating past failures and seeing its reputation dragged down by performances that, as Keane pointed out, “even Scotland would not do worse.” The focus now is on the players’ response and Tuchel’s ability to turn around a situation that is starting to become critical for England’s aspirations in this European Championship.
