Thibaut Courtois did not hold back in his words and revealed, without hesitation, that he has had “direct confrontations” with José Mourinho, the new coach of Real Madrid, but emphasized that he appreciates precisely the straightforwardness that characterizes the Portuguese coach. The confirmation of Mourinho’s return to the helm of the merengues, following the re-election of Florentino Pérez, has caused a real earthquake in Madrid and divided fans and commentators. The controversy is underway: will Mourinho be able to impose, once again, his explosive personality and uncompromising style in a dressing room full of stars and inflated egos?
Real Madrid officially announced a few days ago the return of José Mourinho, 63, to the bench at Santiago Bernabéu, in a second stint that promises to be anything but peaceful. The Portuguese coach returns to a place where he won a La Liga and a Copa del Rey between 2010 and 2013, but from which he left under heavy criticism and after a season without titles, marked by public disagreements with several figures from the squad. Since then, Mourinho has only secured one championship title — with Chelsea in 2015 — and has not stayed more than three consecutive years at any of the six teams he has managed.

Thibaut Courtois, the starting goalkeeper for the whites, did not hesitate to express his support for Mourinho’s arrival, reminding, however, that the coach is not afraid to clash with players if he feels it is necessary. “Mourinho is a very direct coach. I am the same,” Courtois stated during a press conference ahead of Belgium’s opening match in the World Cup against Egypt. “Our relationship has always been very good,” assured the Belgian international, who worked with Mourinho at Chelsea. Despite this, Courtois recalled that it was not always peaceful: “We also had our occasional confrontations. For example, he left me on the bench against Everton because I had failed to catch two crosses in the previous game against Aston Villa. That was his way of provoking me. The following week, I returned to goal against West Ham and made five or six crucial saves,” he recounted, laughing.
As Courtois’ words serve as a harbinger of what this new Mourinho era at Real Madrid may bring, where demand and discipline are once again at the forefront. It is worth recalling that during his first stint, Mourinho did not hesitate to bench Iker Casillas, the club’s captain and legend, opting for Diego López at a crucial phase of the 2013 season. The coach publicly justified his decision with performance-related issues, but the behind-the-scenes atmosphere was rife with rumors of a rift that had transcended the pitch.
The controversy was reignited recently when Iker Casillas, now retired, commented on social media about the possibility of Mourinho returning to the Bernabéu: “I have no problem with Mourinho. He seems to me to be a great professional. I don’t want him at Real Madrid. I think other coaches would be better prepared to manage the club of my life. Personal opinion. Nothing more.” The former goalkeeper’s statement shows that the wounds of the past have not yet fully healed.
Despite the tense environment that is anticipated, Courtois made it clear that he intends to remain at Real Madrid until the end of his career. “For me, the ideal would be to finish my career in Madrid,” said the Belgian, who is currently 34 years old. “At Real Madrid, from the age of 30, the contract is renewed year by year, so I am quite calm. If I continue to perform as I have been, the renewal will not be a problem. But Real Madrid is a top club and, at some point, they will also have to think about a successor,” acknowledged Courtois, who has a contract until 2027 and has already won two Champions League titles with the Madrid club.
The return of Mourinho promises to stir things up even more in a Real Madrid that demands immediate achievements and does not tolerate adaptation periods. The dressing room will have to quickly get used to the abrasive style of the Portuguese, lest they repeat the conflicts of 2013. Courtois himself, with his experience and leadership, could be a key piece in ensuring stability in this new phase. The coming times will be decisive: Will Mourinho know how to earn the respect of the squad or will he once again be at the center of internal confrontations? One thing is certain — no one will remain indifferent to the reunion between the coach and the Spanish giant.
