Serena Williams has once again electrified the world of tennis, leaving fans and experts in shock with her performance upon returning to competition. Although her participation in the Queen’s Club Championships was abruptly cut short due to factors beyond her control, Williams demonstrated, without a doubt, that she continues to play tennis at an absolutely exceptional level — much to the delight of all, including notable figures like Judy Murray.

The legendary American, winner of 23 Grand Slam titles, teamed up with young prospect Victoria Mboko at Queen’s, where they faced a tough test against the third seeds, Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe. Against all odds, Williams and Mboko overcame the pressure, winning 7-6(2), 6-2, in a performance that had the crowd on their feet. This comeback, marking Serena’s first match since 2022, was marked by some moments of natural competitive rust, but the quality and intensity of her response on the court made it clear that she is an eternal champion.

The impact of this return is not limited to the match result. Serena Williams, now a mother of two, is one of the most charismatic and influential figures in the history of sports. Her comeback is a true media event, with profound implications for the women’s circuit. The excitement generated by her presence once again places women’s tennis in the spotlight, inspiring not only young athletes but also mothers and women seeking to balance family life with high-level competition. For the WTA circuit, Serena’s presence is a marketing boost and an injection of competitive energy at a time when the sport needs global stars.

Judy Murray, mother of former British tennis players Andy and Jamie Murray, did not hide her astonishment and admiration when commenting on Williams’ victory for Sky Sports. “I don’t think anyone expected her to come back after she retired, I think it was in 2022,” said Murray, emphasizing the surprise element of this return. “She now has two children, but she has been playing a lot; clearly, she has gotten herself into excellent shape, she is fit and ready to compete again.” The Scot also highlighted the importance of Serena having her family present: “I saw a video where she said it was very important for her that her children saw her play, to know who she is and what she does. I loved the fact that her husband and children were by the court and welcomed her when she came off.” In her analysis of the performance, Murray was unequivocal: “She showed that she continues to play at an incredibly high level, teaming up with Victoria Mboko in the WTA tournament in Queen’s and winning the first match. And there is tremendous support from the crowd, a legion of fans behind her, it’s fantastic – another mother returning to the tour successfully, brilliant.”

However, the fairy tale suffered an unexpected blow when Victoria Mboko, during her singles match against former Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova, fell spectacularly and severely injured her left knee. The Canadian left the court in tears, visibly shaken, and was forced to withdraw not only from the singles tournament but also from the doubles, ultimately missing Wimbledon – where she had legitimate aspirations of surpassing the second round she reached in her debut. This setback removes the possibility for Serena Williams to continue shining at Queen’s, much to the disappointment of fans and the champion herself, who appeared visibly happy and motivated to be back in the major arenas.

Despite the setback, Serena Williams’ return is far from over. The next chapter of this epic saga is already scheduled for the Berlin tournament, where she will team up with Karolina Muchova, in a clear preparation for the very likely participation in Wimbledon. The anticipation is high: can the American, at 44 years old, once again challenge the limits of the sport and make history at the All England Club? One thing is certain: no one will be indifferent to her presence, and women’s tennis will once again have its queen on the court, ready to fight for another golden chapter in her legendary career.
