Richard Ríos opened his heart and revealed a story of overcoming adversity that spans from the modest neighborhoods of Medellín to the elite pitches of European football. The 26-year-old Colombian midfielder from Benfica shared in an intimate interview the sacrifices, pressure, and determination that elevated him from a young dreamer to a fulfilled promise on the most demanding stages of international football.
Ríos recalls with emotion his first games on the streets of Medellín, where each match was experienced as an authentic duel of honor between rival neighborhoods. “We felt as if we were in the middle of 60 or 70 thousand people, because it’s an impressive pressure and we don’t want to lose,” confessed the player. For him, winning was not just a matter of points, but of prestige and identity, where triumph transformed the team into the “best in the world” until the next challenge. The nostalgia for futsal and the neighborhood remains alive, but the midfielder knows that it was in that street school that he gained the foundation of his football. “The most important thing is to always keep the ball as far away from the opponent as possible. Then, to step on the ball and some magic that we learned on the street,” explained Ríos, highlighting the lessons that futsal taught him to shine on the field.
The transition to professional football was not easy. Until the age of 18, Ríos struggled with the frustration of not being able to join any club, despite the constant support from his father, who accompanied him on several attempts. “I played futsal until I was 18. I burned my last cartridge and here I am. It worked,” he shared with a mix of pride and relief. Perseverance proved to be crucial for the Colombian midfielder, who now lives the dream of playing in the biggest stadiums and for one of the largest clubs in Europe.
Questioned about what it means to achieve his goals, Ríos does not hide the pride and happiness he feels when stepping onto the historic pitches he once only viewed from a distance. “There were fewer people in the neighborhood, but the pressure was more palpable, perhaps because it is the place where we were born and raised. And now, being in the biggest, most beautiful, and most historic stadiums, instead of feeling pressure, we feel more happiness,” he stated. For him, each game is a celebration of his life journey and a tribute to his origins.
About what truly makes someone great, Richard Ríos is clear and direct: “First of all, it’s knowing what we want in life. You won’t get anywhere if you don’t have a destination. Then, it’s the work and sacrifices we make to realize our dreams. I have never stopped fighting, I have always worked hard and left many things behind to achieve my dreams.” This life philosophy, coupled with his humility and dedication, makes him not only a quality player but also an inspiring example for all young people aspiring to succeed against all odds.
Richard Ríos’ story is a powerful testament that will and effort can transform dreams into the brightest realities. From the streets of Medellín to European stadiums, the midfielder of Benfica proves that with passion and determination, any barrier can be overcome.
