Benfica has reopened the fight to secure the continuity of António Silva, one of the most promising defensive pillars in Portuguese football, presenting a new proposal that could redefine the future of the young centre-back. After months of stalled negotiations and a tense atmosphere between the club and player, this latest move from the Eagles has reignited hope for a positive outcome, but the renewal is far from guaranteed.
António Silva, 22, a product of the Benfica academy, saw his expectations shaken throughout the last season. The loss of prominence to Nicolás Otamendi and Tomás Araújo, as well as his absence from the World Cup squad, left him disappointed and with the feeling of being surpassed within the squad. These frustrations, coupled with months of frozen negotiations, led the defender to consider other options for his professional growth.
However, Benfica’s recent rapprochement brought new arguments that resonated with António Silva. The club’s management presented an improved financial offer, although still far from the player’s demands, who aspires to a net salary exceeding two million euros per season, placing him among the highest earners in the team. In addition to the financial aspect, Benfica assured the young Portuguese international a central role in the sporting project, including a prominent place in the group of captains, a clear sign of faith in his value and leadership.
The clock is ticking for Benfica, which faces the urgency of resolving this issue before the start of pre-season, scheduled for June 25. With Otamendi’s departure and Tomás Araújo’s call-up for the World Cup, António Silva remains the only experienced and available centre-back for the early challenges of the new season, namely the second qualifying round match of the Europa League, set for July 23.
Despite the strong desire expressed, António Silva maintains a position of power. With a contract until 2025 and a release clause set at 100 million euros, the young defender is on the radar of several top foreign clubs. It is worth recalling that in December 2023, Jorge Mendes revealed Juventus’s concrete interest in the player, confirming that “António Silva wants Juventus and Juventus wants António Silva. Now it is up to Benfica to decide.” Gestifute, the agency that represents the athlete, remains attentive to the best opportunities to secure a move to a more competitive league.
The financial scenario is complicated. Despite the high value of the release clause, Benfica knows that it will be difficult to receive an offer close to that amount, especially considering that António Silva has not been indisputable and that there is only one year left until the end of the contract. An offer in the region of 35 million euros, like the one Newcastle is said to have made in the summer of 2024, accompanied by 15 million in performance-related bonuses, seems more realistic and still significant for the current market.
The outcome of this process could be decisive not only for António Silva’s future but also for Benfica, which needs to ensure stability in a key position of its tactical scheme. The pressure is mounting, and the coming weeks will be crucial to determine whether the young defender will continue to wear the eagle or seek new international challenges. The renewal is open, but the final decision is far from straightforward.
