Pisa relegated after bitter defeat to Lecce that intensifies fight for survival in Serie A

Drama has unfolded at the bottom of the Serie A table, and Pisa has officially seen its fate sealed with relegation after losing 2-1 to Lecce in a decisive clash that left the Tuscans 14 points adrift of their rivals, with only three matches remaining. Lecce, now four points above the relegation zone, capitalized on this victory to gain momentum and hope in their fight for survival.

The match began with a surprise: despite being the lowest scorers among the top five European leagues, Lecce proved dangerous right from the start. Lameck Banda made a dazzling run down the left, alarming the opposing defense, although his attempt was easily saved by goalkeeper Adrian Semper. Pisa, pressured by the need for points, responded with clear opportunities just before the quarter-hour mark, including a dangerous free kick from Michel Aebischer that forced Wladimiro Falcone into a crucial save, and a pinpoint pass from Samuele Angori to Filip Stojilkovic, whose shot went wide.

Stojilkovic continued to try to open the scoring for the visitors, but saw his efforts blocked by Tiago Gabriel, and Lecce’s defense almost faltered during a hasty clearance on the goal line when Ebenezer Akinsanmiro failed to make a backward pass, forcing Semper to intervene quickly. Pisa seemed to regain control, with Stefano Moreo heading the ball powerfully and accurately, but Lecce finished the first half with more danger, although the attempts from Banda and Lassana Coulibaly did not result in goals.

The second half brought the goal that tipped the balance: in the 52nd minute, Walid Cheddira used his strength to win the ball and crossed it to Banda, who fired with power and put Lecce ahead. Pisa’s response was almost immediate, with Mehdi Leris taking advantage of a defensive error from the visitors to equalize with a volley, reigniting the hopes of the Tuscan side.

However, Lecce did not let this affect them. With just over 20 minutes to play, Santiago Pierotti shone with a clever run, assisting Cheddira for a precise shot that surpassed Semper and restored the lead for the visitors. Pisa still had a chance to equalize, but Idrissa Toure and Gabriele Piccinini failed to convert a ball offered by Leris in the small area.

Relief for the Tuscans came when a third goal from Lecce was ruled out for offside after a deflection by Francesco Camarda, but luck was not on Pisa’s side in the final minutes. Falcone denied Aebischer with a crucial save in stoppage time, solidifying Pisa’s sixth consecutive defeat, which, along with Verona, mathematically relegated them.

This outcome marks a critical phase for Lecce, which has now gone three consecutive games without losing, and sees its survival in Serie A increasingly within reach. For Pisa, the focus now shifts to preparing for the reality of Serie B, after a season filled with suffering and disappointments.

This clash was more than just a game; it was a decisive battle that confirmed the end of the dream for Pisa and renewed hope for Lecce, in a Serie A that continues to be a true war until the final matchday.
