Rui Borges warns: Injuries at Sporting are affecting results.

The scourge of injuries is affecting the Sporting team alarmingly, and the warning has been issued bluntly by Rui Borges, the club’s assistant coach. In a candid analysis, Borges admitted that the number of injured players this season exceeds acceptable levels and is decisively impacting the team’s performance.

Sporting has already seen 18 players sidelined due to injury throughout this season, a number that puts any top-level structure on high alert. Key names such as Debast and Ioannidis have suffered setbacks after returning to the pitch, while Fresneda’s situation remains uncertain, with the possibility of not playing again until the end of the season. Rui Borges does not hesitate to state that “it is not normal” to have this avalanche of physical problems, but he acknowledges that there are factors beyond the control of the coaching and medical staff.

“If we had 18 muscle injuries, then we would have to rethink everything we are doing in structural terms. But that is not the case. Many of these injuries were traumatic and we could not control them. This has hindered us a lot, and we were destined to pay the price sooner or later. At the most crucial moment to manage the team, we were unable to do so. Key players like Quenda, Ioannidis, and Pote were absent. It is not normal, but it is something we have to deal with,” explained Rui Borges in a direct and realistic tone.

The assistant coach also emphasizes that muscle injuries are inevitable in high-level football, not only at Sporting, but in all teams around the world. “If we compare with other teams, it is more or less the same. The risk exists and there is no way to escape it. Otherwise, we would be playing with the entire B team,” he added.

As for the upcoming challenge against Tondela, uncertainty remains regarding the availability of some players, but Rui Borges did not provide further details, keeping the mystery about who may be doubtful for the match.

This alarming situation at Sporting is not just a physical problem, but a true test of the resilience and management capabilities of the coaching staff. With 18 absences this season, the green and white club faces a titanic struggle to remain competitive in a championship where the margin for error is increasingly narrow. The stark truth is that Sporting is paying a heavy price for injuries, and the immediate future promises to be a minefield to navigate.
