Arthur Fils continues to impress at the Madrid Open, asserting himself with authority and tactical intelligence in a victory that left fans ecstatic. After avoiding a three-set battle against American Emilio Nava, Fils secured his place in the third round with a 7-6(2), 6-3 that showcased his ability to overcome opponents with powerful and consistent serves. This young Frenchman, just 21 years old, is in incredible form, having already accumulated seven consecutive wins since his triumph at the Barcelona Open, and he promises to make a significant impact this season.

The first set was a true demonstration of resilience and concentration. Throughout the match, Nava displayed explosive serving, hovering around 217-219 km/h, making life difficult for Fils, who acknowledged the challenges in receiving: “The guy was serving bombs — 217, 218, 219, 215 km/h. I couldn’t do anything, especially in the first set.” The balance held until the tiebreak, where Fils showcased his class and composure to dominate and close out the first set with an effective serve and fierce receiving: “I had an important game at 5–5 where I thought I could break, but he played very well. I had to deliver a spectacular tiebreak – and I think I did. I was serving well and receiving even better. That was the key.”

In the second set, the match picked up pace, and Fils took the opportunity to impose his rhythm. Despite a brief dip in performance at 3-1, which nearly complicated matters, the Frenchman kept his cool: “I sat down and told myself: ‘You played a tough round — try to make this second one easier.’ I didn’t want another three-set battle; it’s not easy on the body.” With a series of consecutive breaks and three games won to love, Fils confirmed his victory with authority.

The influence of Goran Ivanisevic, coach and mentor, was decisive for Fils’ strategy. The Croatian advised the young French player to focus on his own serves to try to create opportunities against Nava’s strong serve. Fils explained: “Goran told me to concentrate on my serves and that maybe chances would come. He told me this at the beginning of the second set — and I managed to break, which was very smart. At first, I was receiving from very far back, but he was serving too well. So I thought: ‘Step up, choose a side and try to place the return.’ That’s what I did, and I’m quite satisfied.”

Despite the evident physical strain after a first round that nearly lasted three hours against Ignacio Buse, Fils did not give up and maintained maximum concentration, knowing that avoiding a long match at this stage was essential to preserve energy for the upcoming challenges: “I knew the first match would be difficult, with the conditions and everything else. Today I felt better — I was able to rally, which is important for my game.”

In addition to his talent on the court, Fils demonstrates tactical intelligence off it, combining statistical analysis with instinct. The Frenchman revealed: “I look at the statistics — that’s what I do — but on the court, it’s a matter of feeling. For example, today he was supposed to serve more to the T on the deuce side, but in the first games, it just went out. So I thought: ‘Okay, let’s go by feeling.’ Statistics are one thing, but you have to read the game, understand patterns, and sometimes rely on intuition. I think I did that well today.”

The pre-match preparation of Fils is simple and effective. With the support of Ivanisevic, who gives him pointed advice, the young player focuses on the essentials: “I go to the court, hit some balls and that’s it. Goran sometimes tells me two or three things before the match — ‘be careful with this, that, and the other’ — and then it’s just about playing. Simple: play tennis, hit the forehand, period.”

To get into the right rhythm, Fils has a special playlist that energizes him before matches. Among his favorite artists are 50 Cent, with the classic “Many Men,” French rapper Guy2Bezbar, and American Cordae, whose music helps him get into the ideal mindset to give his all on the court.

With at least two guaranteed appearances in the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 this year, Fils is building a solid career and promises to continue climbing the world rankings. After resting his body by not playing in Monte Carlo, the Frenchman’s next opponent is Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and he is one step away from achieving his sixth appearance in the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000 — an impressive feat for such a young and promising player.

The talent, maturity, and determination of Arthur Fils make him one of the rising stars of world tennis. If he continues at this pace, he could very well become a household name in major international competitions. The Madrid Open is just another stage where this young prodigy continues to make his mark.
