Villarreal is one step away from securing a place in next season’s Champions League after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo, a match that marked the fifth consecutive home win for the “Yellow Submarine” – a feat they had not achieved in a decade. Meanwhile, the visitors continue to sink into a deep crisis, suffering their fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions.
The game had barely begun when referee Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez awarded a penalty just 30 seconds in. Alberto Moleiro broke into the Celta area and was brought down by Yoel Lago, with Gerard Moreno calmly converting the spot-kick to give Villarreal the lead just two minutes into the match.
Celta attempted to respond around the 10-minute mark, with Borja Iglesias creating danger in a scramble near the goal and Pablo Durán shooting on the first touch in another opportunity, but they created little else offensively. In the 70th minute, Gueye gave Celta a glimmer of hope by committing a foul in the area on Iglesias. The forward took the penalty, which Tenas saved on the first attempt, but the referee ordered the penalty to be retaken due to an encroachment. On the second attempt, Iglesias did not miss, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
Celta nearly completed the comeback in the 80th minute when Ferran Jutglà headed against the post following a cross from Iago Aspas, leaving nerves frayed in the final minutes.
Villarreal could have settled the match earlier, but Alfonso Pedraza shot straight at Radu in a clear opportunity. Nevertheless, Marcelino’s team held on to their lead and now enjoys a comfortable 15-point advantage over the fifth-placed team with five matches remaining until the end of the championship.
On the other hand, Celta missed the opportunity to return to European positions, remaining “kicked out” at the Estadio de La Cerámica, where they were defeated for the fifth consecutive time.
This victory places Villarreal practically assured of a spot in the next Champions League, in a performance that combined clinical effectiveness and defensive resilience. Marcelino’s team continues to show signs that they will not ease up in the fight for the top of La Liga, while Celta urgently needs to find solutions to escape this negative spiral.
