FC Porto faces heavy fine exceeding 14,000 euros for insults and pyrotechnics in match against Tondela
The atmosphere at the Estádio do Dragão last Sunday was marked by controversy and severe penalties. FC Porto was hit with a barrage of fines imposed by the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following the match in which they defeated Tondela 2-0. The total amount of sanctions exceeded 14,000 euros, reflecting the seriousness of the behaviors exhibited by Porto supporters.
The most significant punishment, which surpasses 10,000 euros, was triggered by offensive chants directed at José Mourinho, the current manager of Benfica and former coach of the Dragons. The situation becomes even more ironic when recalling that moments earlier, FC Porto fans were euphorically celebrating a goal by Benfica against Sporting, clearly demonstrating the complexity of rivalries in Portuguese football.
The report from the Disciplinary Council points to “behaviors that independently cause significant harm to public order and discipline, as well as discriminatory verbal assaults that infringe upon the core of human dignity, assuming a qualified ethical-legal disvalue, and representing behavior that disrupts or threatens order and discipline.” Among the condemned chants, the homophobic insult directed by members of the Porto supporters group Super Dragões stands out, as they chanted the phrase “Mourinho is gay, it’s for…,” in addition to verbal attacks directed at Frederico Varandas, president of Sporting, Benfica, and the goalkeeper of Tondela, particularly before goal kicks.
In addition to these incidents, FC Porto was fined €4,460 due to the use of pyrotechnic devices in the stadium, a prohibited practice that endangers the safety of spectators and players.
These sanctions intensify the pressure on FC Porto to control its fans and prevent behaviors that tarnish the image of the club and Portuguese football. The Portuguese Football Federation makes it clear that it will not tolerate any form of discrimination or verbal violence, whether against sports figures, opponents, or anyone else.
José Mourinho, a central figure in these incidents, continues to be one of the most controversial names in national football, and now also the target of harsh criticism and insults that have cost dearly to the club where he made history.
FC Porto must respond to these fines and implement effective measures to prevent further occurrences, or risk facing even harsher sanctions in the future. The message is clear: Portuguese football cannot be a stage for behaviors that disrespect fair play and the fundamental values of sport.
