After a decade of suspense and accusations, an explosive conclusion has finally arrived in the case known as “Saco Azul,” involving top figures in Portuguese football. All defendants, including the former president of Benfica, Luís Filipe Vieira, were acquitted this Thursday by the Lisbon court, in a decision that promises to ignite the debate over justice and impunity in national sports.

The judge responsible for the trial did not hold back in criticizing the difficulty of uncovering the truth after so much time: “Only with a forensic technical examination can we know who did what, who entered the system, and what computer problems were created. And now it is impossible, at this stage of the trial, to do that, ten years later.” This statement calls into question the entire investigation, exposing a structural fragility that led to the total acquittal of those involved.

The “Saco Azul” case revolves around an alleged scheme between 2015 and 2018, in which the defendants reportedly used fictitious IT consulting contracts to divert more than 1.8 million euros from Benfica. According to the prosecution, the money largely returned to the club in cash, raising suspicions about the legality and ethics of these operations. However, the court concluded that “it is not possible, at this distance, comparing versions of documents, with the vagueness they have,” to reach a secure conclusion free of doubts.

The main question lies in the role of businessman José Bernardes, owner of the company Questãoflexível, identified by the Public Prosecutor’s Office as a central figure in the alleged fraud. The judge clarified: “The issue is solely related to the hat worn by the defendant José Bernardes to carry out those works for Benfica. That is the main doubt.” There are arguments supporting that Bernardes effectively worked for Benfica, but there are also reasons to doubt, making a conviction impossible.

In addition to Luís Filipe Vieira, who led Benfica from 2003 to 2021, former executive director Domingos Soares de Oliveira, former financial director Miguel Moreira, businessman José Bernardes, suspects José Raposo and Paulo Silva, as well as the entities Benfica SAD and Benfica Estádio were acquitted.

Manuel Magalhães e Silva, lawyer for Luís Filipe Vieira, emphasized the importance of this decision: “Ten years is always a tragedy, justice delayed is justice denied.” This statement resonates as a serious warning for the judicial system and Portuguese football, reminding that prolonged processes erode public trust and harm the credibility of institutions.

This outcome opens a new chapter in the controversy surrounding one of the largest national clubs, raising crucial questions about the effectiveness of investigations into financial crimes in sports and the judicial system’s ability to handle complex and prolonged cases. ‘Delayed justice’ may ultimately signify denied justice, leaving a trail of doubts and controversies that will continue to echo in the corridors of Portuguese football.
