Explosive outrage at Real Madrid following controversial red card for Camavinga that cost defeat in the Champions League

The defeat of Real Madrid against Bayern Munich (6-4 on aggregate) last Wednesday was marked by a refereeing decision that is igniting the football world. Eduardo Camavinga, on the pitch for just 24 minutes, received a red card in the 86th minute after picking up a second yellow for having touched the ball and delaying the execution of a free kick for Bayern. Jude Bellingham, teammate and English midfielder, did not hold back in describing the expulsion: “A joke. Impossible to be a red,” he declared in Spanish, visibly upset, as he headed to the team bus in Munich.

This fateful incident occurred with the score tied at 4-4 on aggregate in the quarter-final tie of the Champions League. The expulsion forced Real to play the final minutes with only 10 players, a situation that allowed Bayern to score two decisive goals and secure their place in the semi-finals. The controversy was immediate and total.

Voices of outrage in Madrid: Carvajal confronts referee and Guler sent off after the match.

The indignation was not confined to Bellingham. Several Real Madrid players expressed their discontent on social media and behind the scenes. Antonio Rudiger, Real’s defender, merely hinted at his displeasure by questioning the decision: “Did you see the red card?” Club captain Dani Carvajal, although he did not play, went to the sidelines to confront referee Slavko Vincic, visibly agitated and directly accusing him: “This is your fault,” the Spaniard was heard shouting.

Arda Guler, the scorer of the first two Madrid goals, also saw red after the match as a consequence of his anger towards the officiating. On Instagram, he posted a message of apology to the fans: “This was not how it should have been. We are very sad. We will come back. Hala Madrid.” Guler will miss the first match of next season’s La Liga due to the suspension.

Alvaro Arbeloa, coach of Real Madrid, was categorical: “The expulsion decided the game. You can’t send a player off for something like that. No one understands how this was a red card.” Arbeloa believes the referee did not realize that Camavinga already had a yellow card, and that Bayern players should have informed the referee of the second infraction. For him, it is a “double error” that “ruined a match that was tight and exciting until the end.”

The Spanish journalist Juan Castro described the atmosphere among the players and coaching staff as one of pure disbelief and outrage. “They are very angry with the referee. This decision changed the balance of the game in favor of Bayern. You can’t give a second yellow card in moments like this in the Champions when everything is tied.”

Reactions from Bayern players: Luis Diaz supports the referee and highlights the impact of the red card

On Bayern’s side, the atmosphere was obviously different. Luis Diaz, who scored one of the decisive goals, defended the referee’s decision: “I clearly saw the incident and I think the referee did well to send Camavinga off. We wanted to take the free kick quickly and he delayed the process. The red card motivated us even more; we felt it was our chance and we took it.”

Harry Kane, Bayern’s goalscorer, emphasized the importance of the victory, acknowledging that the red card had an impact but stressing the team’s ability to seize opportunities: “The red card helped a bit, but we had to take advantage of the decisive moments at the end, and with Luis and Mike (Olise) we managed to do that.”

The UEFA announced that it will analyze the referee’s report to decide on any disciplinary consequences, in a situation that promises to generate controversy and heated debates in the coming days. Camavinga’s red card could mark a turning point not only in this European clash but also in the discussion about the criteria and rigor of officiating in the biggest competitions in world football.
