Cristian Chivu lashes out against the “witch hunt” targeting Bastoni: “The critics need psychological help”

At a time when Alessandro Bastoni finds himself at the center of a storm of fierce criticism, Inter Milan’s coach, Cristian Chivu, does not hesitate to publicly defend his player tooth and nail. In exclusive statements to Sport Mediaset, Chivu denounces a true “witch hunt” against the Italian defender, accusing his detractors of needing more “psychological work” than Bastoni himself.

The moment of tension for Bastoni has been ongoing since February, with episodes that have further inflamed the anger of fans and the media. During a Serie A match against Juventus, Bastoni was booed in several away stadiums after provoking and celebrating the expulsion of defender Pierre Kalulu. A few weeks later, the situation worsened when the player was sent off in the World Cup playoff final for the Italian national team against Bosnia and Herzegovina, increasing public scrutiny over his performance and behavior.

Chivu, who recently took over as head coach of Inter, has no doubts: “Alessandro does not need to be ‘fixed’ psychologically. People have gone too far, triggering a witch hunt that is not fair to him. In fact, I think it is the critics themselves who should do some psychological work.”

The unwavering defense by the coach comes in a context where Inter is starting to regain ground, following a series of three games without a win. The recent victory of 5-2 against Roma at the iconic San Siro propelled the Nerazzurri to the top of the Serie A table, with a comfortable seven-point lead over second-placed Napoli. Additionally, the team is in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, reinforcing their ambitions to win titles in this final stretch of the season.

Chivu emphasizes the responsibility he feels in leading a giant like Inter: “Being the coach of Inter means having great ambitions. I’m happy because we enter the last two months of the season with a real possibility of achieving our goals. We have a duty to believe that we can still win everything that is at stake.”

The Romanian coach also highlights his authenticity and how he deals with external pressures: “My principles go beyond the expectations or narratives of others. I have never tried to change. I have always been myself and I don’t feel the need to make bombastic statements or seek conflict.”

With this forceful intervention, Cristian Chivu not only defends Bastoni but also sends a clear warning to those who underestimate the player and fuel the controversy surrounding him. Inter is preparing for the upcoming challenges with renewed focus and the conviction that the team and its leader will maintain serenity and determination in the fight for titles.
