Flavio Cobolli triumphs in Monte-Carlo after epic 2h30 battle against Comesana: “It was a war of nerves and technique”

At the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, young Italian talent Flavio Cobolli delivered an electrifying debut, defeating Argentine Francisco Comesana in a match that lasted two and a half hours and thrilled fans. Cobolli did not hide the toughness of the clash, revealing in an exclusive interview with Sky Sport the behind-the-scenes of this hard-fought victory, which places him in the spotlight on the circuit.

“Before the match, we talked little about tactics; we knew it would be a complicated duel,” confessed Cobolli, who had come off a week of intense training and took advantage of a rare ten-day period to rest and prepare for this major event. “I had never had so much time to train and recover before a tournament of this level. That helped me be ready to face this battle.”

The Italian was fully aware of the obstacles he would face and kept a cool head even in the most difficult moments. “I knew I would have difficulties, especially in feeling the ball. The goal was to stay in the fight, even if the game became complicated. In the second set, I had a blackout; it’s normal, it’s part of the game. I am very satisfied with how I reacted.” Cobolli emphasized the importance of dominating the game and maintaining pressure: “The key to winning important matches is being able to push the opponent and control the pace. I have been training for that, but in competition, it’s always more challenging than in practice. Sometimes I step back a bit or I’m not as aggressive when the tension rises, but today, in the decisive moments, I believe I played well.”

The drama of broken rackets did not go unnoticed either. Cobolli revealed to the ATP Tour that he broke several rackets during the match: “I broke many, but that’s part of the game. It was my first match on clay this season, and maybe the strings were a bit worn out. We are prepared for these kinds of setbacks. I sent the rackets to be repaired immediately, and I managed to overcome the problem.”

Cobolli’s next challenge will be against Belgian Alexander Blockx, an opponent he knows well. “We trained together a few days ago. He plays well and is confident, so it will be a match that I will approach with great attention,” warned the Italian, who promises to continue surprising in this Masters 1000.

With this hard-fought victory, Flavio Cobolli confirms his potential and ability to make an impact on the grand stages of world tennis. The young Italian is on his way to becoming a force to be reckoned with in the clay court season, and the upcoming matches will be crucial for his growth on the circuit. Stay tuned, because the name Flavio Cobolli is gaining more and more weight in international tennis!
