Inter Milan thrashes Roma with historic rout: Cristian Chivu praises the Italians after stunning victory

On a night to remember at the Giuseppe Meazza, Inter Milan dismantled Roma 5-2 in a football spectacle that left everyone in awe. Coach Cristian Chivu spared no praise for his Italian players, who delivered a brilliant performance on the pitch, especially following Italy’s harsh defeat in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

The setback for Italy against Bosnia & Herzegovina, which dashed the azzurri’s hopes, still lingered in the minds of many, but yesterday, on the field, the national team’s representatives showed resilience and a desire to turn the page. Federico Dimarco, Nicolo Barella, and Alessandro Bastoni, key figures in the fateful playoff, were decisive in Inter’s victory.

Bastoni, who was one of the main culprits in Italy’s elimination after receiving a straight red card at a crucial stage of the match, redeemed himself with a solid and secure display, showing that he learned from the grave mistake made in Zenica. Barella, for his part, scored in the Serie A for the first time since October, propelling the team towards their first championship victory since February. Dimarco, although without goals, shone with his intensity on the left flank, contributing to Inter’s dominance.

“I don’t need to answer that question,” Chivu stated at the post-match press conference, citing his team’s impressive display. “The players responded on the pitch with a wonderful performance. We have to accept the result, move on, and learn from our mistakes. I hope this doesn’t turn into an isolated case.”

Regarding the strategy to face Roma and the importance of Francesco Acerbi, who was one of the game’s focal points, Chivu explained: “Gasperini’s teams play man-to-man, and we prepared for that. I even saw Malen playing as a centre-back to mark Acerbi, and he did a good job. We showed courage, maturity, used the goalkeeper well, and won the duels, especially in the second half.”

When asked about the impact of this victory on the championship, the Romanian coach was unequivocal: “This team is mature and has proven it many times. Yesterday, especially in the second half, they showed real aggression. It wasn’t an easy game; in the first half, Roma caused us problems with passes and depth. We were slow to close down Pisilli and suffered in our defensive line. However, we managed to go into halftime leading 2-1 and killed off the game early in the second half.”

This triumph is not just a win on the scoreboard but a vital boost for the morale and unity of the group, reinforcing Inter’s aspirations in the fight for the Italian title.
