The situation of Raheem Sterling at Feyenoord has become a real topic of discussion, especially following a disappointing performance that led to fierce criticism. The English international, who joined the Dutch club after terminating his contract with Chelsea, seems to be going through a troubled time in his career. With a record of five matches, zero goals, and only one assist, his influence on the team has been virtually non-existent, with Feyenoord managing just two victories during this period.
After a 1-1 draw against Ajax, where Sterling was substituted in the 55th minute following the opponent’s goal, former Dutch international René van der Gijp did not hold back in his remarks. On the podcast Willem & Wessel, he launched criticisms at the English star, suggesting that Sterling should have an honest conversation with coach Robin van Persie. “He should go talk to the coach and say, ‘Let’s end this, it’s not going to work, it’s not good for me or the club.’ He should go to Ibiza, put on a swimsuit, and eat a delicious paella with his wife! That’s when he would really be having fun. But this is not going to work out for him anymore. It’s a shame,” Van der Gijp stated, emphasizing his dissatisfaction with the player’s performance.
Sterling, who will receive around two million euros for half a season at Feyenoord, sees his financial situation offset by on-field performance that does not justify the investment. With nearly 200,000 euros per game, expectations regarding his performance are high, but the results have been disappointing.
Currently, Feyenoord occupies 2nd place in the Eredivisie, with 53 points; however, the title race seems almost impossible, given that PSV is leading with 68 points, just six matches from the end. Van Persie’s team is now focused on securing 2nd place, which guarantees direct access to the Champions League group stage. With NEC just three points behind and Ajax five points away, the pressure is mounting.
In addition, Feyenoord has other notable players in its squad, such as Casper Tengstedt, Gonçalo Borges, and St. Juste, who hope to help the team remain competitive in the fight for a place in European elite. The question now is whether Raheem Sterling will be able to rediscover his form and justify the expectations that accompanied him when he joined the club. The player’s future at Feyenoord will undoubtedly depend on his upcoming performances.
