Renowned Portuguese surfer Teresa Bonvalot faces a new chapter in her already challenging career after undergoing complex foot surgery, an operation that lasted an impressive four and a half hours. This surgical intervention is the result of a long ordeal that dragged on for six months, all due to an unfortunate incident that occurred during an ISA competition in El Salvador, where a sea urchin caused an injury that forced her to compete in intense pain.
The accident, which turned into a nightmare for the athlete, happened dramatically. On the last wave of her heat, Bonvalot was violently thrown against the seabed, colliding with a rock and a sea urchin, resulting in an open wound on her foot. What initially seemed like a quick recovery for the Challenger Series event in Portugal quickly transformed into a prolonged battle against pain and uncertainty.
“It’s been a real hell for the past six months since I got hurt representing Portugal at the ISA. It all started on the last wave of my heat. I was thrown hard to the bottom and hit a rock… with a sea urchin,” Teresa lamented, reflecting on the devastating impact the injury had on her life and career. The athlete, who has been an emblematic figure in national surfing, believed that the minor surgery performed in October would solve the problem, but the pain persisted, revealing that spikes from the sea urchin were still lodged in her foot and affecting both the joint and the bone.
The situation became even more critical when, during a competition in Hawaii, Teresa faced a new crisis that left her unable to walk normally. “What usually helps an athlete improve… only made things worse for me. Training, training, training was not the solution. And at the same time, there was a qualification at stake. But there was also constant uncertainty, because I never knew how I would be the next day,” the surfer shared on her Instagram account.
Despite the debilitating pain and the constant struggle for qualification for the main circuit, Bonvalot remained resilient, competing even under the shadow of physical uncertainty. “I fought until the end. Against all my demons, all doubts, all uncertainties. But I never stopped believing,” the athlete revealed, showing unwavering determination. “I gave my all within my limitations. That was my mindset: to give 100%, even when I felt like I only had 20% in me.”
After the completion of the last stage of the Challenger Series and in consultation with her medical team, Teresa finally decided on surgery. Last Friday, the procedure was successfully carried out, involving the removal of the remaining spikes, cleaning of the joint, and scraping of the affected bone. “Now we believe it will be resolved,” wrote 26-year-old Teresa Bonvalot on her social media, expressing renewed hope and determination to get back to the waves.
Teresa Bonvalot’s recovery will be closely monitored by fans and followers, who are hoping for a triumphant return of the surfer to competitions, now that she seems to have put this difficult and painful chapter of her career behind her.
