Amanda Anisimova, a rising star in the world of tennis, showcased her resilience in a dramatic opening match at the Miami Open, narrowly overcoming Ajla Tomljanovic with scores of 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. The match was far from straightforward, marked by rain interruptions and pivotal moments that tested Anisimova’s focus and emotional control.

The American player appeared on track for a comfortable victory, building a solid lead before the weather cruelly intervened at a crucial moment in the second set. Leading 6-1, 5-4, Anisimova was just two points away from closing out the match when rain halted play. This unexpected break completely shifted the momentum of the contest. Upon resuming, Tomljanovic saved both match points and surged ahead, winning three consecutive games to level the match and force a decisive third set.

“This was a real test of concentration,” Anisimova said, reflecting on the challenges posed by the interruptions. “I knew it was going to be a tough match, and there were a lot of stoppages because of the rain, so I tried to stay focused. There were many momentum shifts in the match, so I’m really happy with how I stayed strong, kept my head up, and kept pushing forward.”

Despite losing control of the second set, Anisimova’s mental strength shone through in the deciding set. She regained her composure, broke Tomljanovic’s serve at a crucial moment, and managed the final phase well to secure victory after two hours of intense play. This triumph continues her good form in 2026, following an elimination in the fourth round at Indian Wells and a quarter-final appearance at the Australian Open, as well as a semi-final at the WTA 1000 in Qatar.

Anisimova spoke openly about the difficulties of maintaining concentration amid interruptions, acknowledging that such situations are part of playing at the highest level. “It wasn’t easy. It was a very, very tough break. I felt that the end of the second set happened in just a few minutes,” she stated, emphasizing the challenges that external factors can pose to the rhythm of a match.

Off the court, Anisimova highlighted a new mindset that prioritizes positivity over excessive analysis. “I’m not trying to be too analytical about my game. I feel like I was doing too much of that at the beginning of the year, and now I’m just trying to focus on the positive aspects,” she explained. This approach has been reinforced by the supportive atmosphere of competing at home in Miami, which she describes as a source of motivation rather than pressure. “I don’t feel pressure. I feel more supported in this tournament. I have a great balance, and it’s really nice to have the love and support of my family and friends,” she added.

Off-court activities also play an important role in her development. Engaging with brands and different projects allows her to express her personality beyond tennis. “It’s a lot of fun, and I love being able to show my personality off the court and do things with brands I like. It’s always great to meet new people and work on projects,” she stated.

Furthermore, her interest in different formats of the sport, such as mixed doubles, reflects a desire for variety and evolution. “I love playing mixed doubles. I don’t usually play many doubles, but I’m becoming more comfortable. It’s always a lot of fun, especially when the circuits come together,” she concluded.

With determination and an evolving mindset, Amanda Anisimova is not just surviving in the competitive world of tennis; she is thriving, proving that she has what it takes to face challenges head-on, both on and off the court. As she progresses in the Miami Open, fans will be watching closely to see how far this talented player can go.
