“Villarreal shines in the first half and defeats Real Sociedad in LaLiga.”

In a high-intensity display, Villarreal secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Real Sociedad at the Estadio de la Cerámica, solidifying their position at the top of the LaLiga table. With this triumph, the “Yellow Submarine” celebrates their first “double” over the Basque giants since the 2016/17 season. The promising week for Spanish teams in Europe significantly increased LaLiga’s chances of securing an additional spot in the UEFA Champions League, and Villarreal, aiming for the top four, left no room for Sociedad to dream of fifth place.

Gerard Moreno, Villarreal’s star player, wasted no time and opened the scoring just nine minutes into the match, netting his eighth goal of the league by heading in a well-executed corner from Santi Comesana. Real Sociedad appeared far from the form that could take them to the Champions League next season, and Moreno played a crucial role in Villarreal’s second goal, when his shot was partially saved, allowing Georges Mikautadze to capitalize and find the back of the net.

With confidence high, Villarreal demonstrated why they are one of the best counter-attacking teams in Spain. In a swift move, Nicolas Pepe received the ball and, after a crucial deflection, fired in the third goal, leaving goalkeeper Alex Remiro without a reaction. Real Sociedad struggled to respond to this overwhelming attack, and Villarreal’s goalkeeper, Luiz Junior, made an important intervention to prevent Mikel Oyarzabal from scoring in a one-on-one situation, just moments after Pepe had hit the crossbar.

However, the second half brought a twist for Luiz Junior. In a hasty decision, he went out to intercept a cross that was deflected by Renato Veiga, leaving the goal unprotected for Luka Sucic, who, as a substitute, did not hesitate to seize the opportunity to score with a deflected shot.

Real Sociedad had the chance to recover, but Mikautadze failed to restore the three-goal advantage by shooting wide on a clear opportunity. The Georgian forward’s luck improved when Orri Oskarsson’s goal was disallowed for offside, ending any hopes of a comeback from the visitors.

With this defeat, Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team remains in seventh place, now six points behind fifth place, while Villarreal climbs to third, surpassing Atlético Madrid. The victory not only reaffirms Villarreal’s strength in the fight for a Champions League spot but also emphasizes the need for Real Sociedad to reassess its ambitions in the league.
