On Monday night, the auditorium of the newspaper “O Gaiense” in Vila Nova de Gaia transformed into a true tribute to the legacy of Jorge Costa, in a gala that moved everyone present. The event, which recognized the best players, coaches, and referees in the region, featured a touching homage to the former captain of FC Porto, who tragically passed away last summer due to a cardiorespiratory arrest. Amidst tears and memories, Diogo Costa, the current goalkeeper and captain of the team, could not contain his emotion, highlighting the depth of the loss.

The inaugural moment of the gala was marked by a video celebrating Jorge Costa’s brilliant career, culminating in a warm ovation that echoed throughout the auditorium. His partner, Estela Costa, accompanied by their children, took to the stage to receive an award on behalf of Jorge, moving the audience with words that resonated deeply: “All initiatives that help to perpetuate Jorge’s memory touch our hearts.” Her message was not limited to recalling the past; Estela also made an appeal to the emerging young football talents: “To all those who shared football with Jorge, we wish that you maintain your strength and continue to assert your talent… Remember, regardless of the stage each of you is in, there is a greater privilege that we all share: the privilege of being alive.”

The tribute did not go unnoticed by Diogo Costa, who, visibly emotional, had to wipe away tears as he recalled moments with Jorge Costa, an icon of Portuguese football. After the tribute, he and Cláudio Ramos left the gala to prepare for the Europa League match against Stuttgart, but Jorge’s presence still lingered in the air, showing that his influence remains alive in the hearts of many.

Roberto Martínez, the national team coach who won the Nations League last season, was also one of the honorees of the night. With a speech full of pride, Martínez thanked everyone who contributed to the success of Portuguese football and emphasized the importance of teamwork: “I receive this distinction with great pride, but only on behalf of the players we have in the national team and our support staff.” In a clear tribute to Fernando Santos and all the former players who now serve as coaches, Martínez reminded that the success of Portuguese football is the result of a collective effort over the years.

Finally, Bino Maçães, also recognized at the gala, commented on the performance of players like Anísio and Mide, highlighting the importance of their performance for the future of the club and the sport in general. The gala was undoubtedly a testament to the passion for football and the lasting impact that figures like Jorge Costa have on the lives of all who love the sport.
