Aryna Sabalenka, the indomitable force of women’s tennis, reached an exciting milestone in her career by winning the BNP Paribas Open title at Indian Wells. The victory not only solidified her position as the world’s number one but also intertwined with unforgettable personal moments. After an epic battle against Elena Rybakina, where she saved a match point, Sabalenka used her victory speech to express her gratitude to her fiancé, revealing that the week was filled with celebrations, including a new puppy and her engagement.
The final was a nail-biting spectacle. Sabalenka, after a challenging start, overcame Rybakina with a final score of 3–6, 6–3, 7–6(6). The Belarusian made an impressive comeback, winning three consecutive points in the decisive tie-break to secure her first title at Indian Wells. This triumph also marks Sabalenka’s 10th WTA 1000 title and the 23rd of her career, with 20 of those won on hard courts. Additionally, it ended Rybakina’s streak of 12 consecutive victories against top 10 opponents.
However, the highlight of the tournament was Sabalenka’s emotional message after the match. “And thank you to my fiancé. What a week, we got a dog, I got engaged, and I won the title,” said the four-time Grand Slam champion. “I will definitely remember this for the rest of my life. Thank you, everyone.”
The clash began with Rybakina dominating the first part, gaining the upper hand with a crucial break in the sixth game and closing the set at 6–3. However, Sabalenka’s response was explosive. In the second set, she adjusted her strategy, improved her returns, and began to control the rallies, achieving a decisive break and leveling the match.
The final set brought a rollercoaster of emotions. Sabalenka seemed to be in control, leading 4–1, but Rybakina, with resilience, managed to break her when she was serving for the title. The tie-break was a tense battle, where Rybakina had the chance to close out the match but failed to convert her match point. Sabalenka, on the other hand, proved unbeatable, winning the last three points to secure the tie-break victory at 8–6.
After the tumult of the final, Sabalenka did not forget to acknowledge Rybakina’s effort and the event organizers. “Well, guys, what a day, it’s unbearably hot. I don’t know if I can make sense right now, but I’ll try,” she commented. She expressed her hope that the two would meet again in the later stages of future tournaments, promising more exciting battles on the court.
The Belarusian also expressed her gratitude to the fans who endured the scorching conditions to watch the spectacle. “Thank you Indian Wells, thank you BNP Paribas, thank you Tommy, thank you to everyone who made this tournament possible. It is truly a tennis paradise and I am always happy to come back here every year, and thank God I managed to get this trophy.”
Finally, Sabalenka paid tribute to her team, acknowledging the constant support she receives throughout the season. “Last but not least, I want to thank my team for always being there, for always advising me in the best way, for supporting me no matter what happens. Thank you for being so strong, I am so proud of you.”
With 17 wins in her last 18 matches, Aryna Sabalenka not only left Indian Wells with the trophy but also with renewed confidence and a heart full of love, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead in this exciting season.
