In a high-tension scenario in football, Newcastle manager, Eddie Howe’s decision not to field Anthony Gordon in the crucial Champions League match against Barcelona has sparked a wave of criticism, particularly from Magpies legend Alan Shearer. In response to the avalanche of criticism, Eddie Howe defended his player, clarifying that the decision not to start Gordon was his. “I need to clarify something about Anthony Gordon. He was absolutely willing to play against Barcelona. I know there are many comments, but it was my decision not to start him based on the fact that he was ill that morning and did not attend the training session.” Despite his willingness, the decision was made in conjunction with the medical team, who deemed that Gordon was not fit to start the match.
Gordon, who has played a key role in Newcastle’s attack, especially in a season marked by injuries to teammates, has already scored 10 goals in the Champions League, although he has struggled in the Premier League with only four goals. Howe praised Gordon’s competitive character, describing him as a true winner: “He wants to win everything, he is a true competitor. In addition to Gordon’s situation, Howe also provided updates on other players.
