The situation of English clubs in the Champions League has sparked intense debate among fans and experts, especially following a disappointing round for representatives of the Premier League. Arne Slot, manager of Liverpool, addressed this issue calmly and thoughtfully, stating that it is premature to draw hasty conclusions about the difficulties faced by English clubs in the European competition.
This week, none of the six clubs from the Premier League managed to win their opening matches in the round of 16 of the Champions League. Liverpool, for example, suffered a 1-0 defeat against Galatasaray, while Arsenal drew 1-1 with Bayer Leverkusen. Newcastle United also held a 1-1 draw at home against Barcelona. The bad news continued for Chelsea and Tottenham, who were crushed with 5-2 defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Atlético de Madrid, respectively. Finally, Manchester City left the pitch with a heavy 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid.
“It is a mistake to jump to conclusions after just one round,” Slot stated. “The sample size is so small that it is not wise to do that now. Perhaps, after next week, we will have a completely different conclusion.”
Slot also mentioned that the lack of a winter break could be a factor, although he did not attribute full responsibility to it: “I’m not saying that all these teams lost because of the lack of a winter break. What happens is that, in the round of 16 in Europe, you are facing very good teams. And four of the five other teams in the Champions League played away, which usually represents an advantage for the home team.”
The coach recalled that the last season in which no English club won their first match in the round of 16 was in 2022-23, when, even so, Chelsea and Manchester City managed to advance to the quarter-finals. “We should wait to make a judgment. We will all evaluate after next week, and maybe, even then, it will still be too early to draw conclusions,” added Slot, who was preparing for the league match against Tottenham on Sunday.
“If you are in the round of 16 of the Champions League, all teams are very good and strong. The margins were, in all the games I saw, and in ours, really small. We didn’t deserve to lose,” concluded the coach, reinforcing the idea that jumping to conclusions is a common mistake in the world of football.
With pressure mounting on English clubs, the upcoming round of the Champions League will be crucial to turn the tide and demonstrate that the Premier League is still a formidable force in Europe.
