The AC Milan goalkeeper, Mike Maignan, expressed his deep pride in being the captain of the historic rossonera team, highlighting his determination to turn things around this season. In a candid interview, Maignan did not hesitate to praise Massimiliano Allegri, calling him a “top coach” and expressing his fervent desire to claim the glory that Milan deserves.
Maignan, who renewed his contract until 2031 in January, took on the captain’s armband at the start of the 2025-26 season. “Being the captain of the team is a huge responsibility, and I am very proud of it,” Maignan stated in comments to DAZ, as reported by Calciomercato. He emphasized the importance of being authentic: “There is no need to play a role; you just need to be yourself and set an example, without distorting the armband or the status it brings.”
The French player, who has always felt like a leader even before receiving the armband, revealed that “in the past, I told coaches in training that I didn’t need it because I felt like a captain even without it. Today, it is a great source of pride for me.” This sentiment is even more relevant considering that last season was a challenge for Milan, which failed to qualify for European competitions.
Following the departure of Paulo Fonseca, Milan saw Sergio Conceição take over as head coach, but the team faced a series of setbacks, including elimination in the group stage of the Champions League and a bitter defeat in the Coppa Italia final against Bologna, despite having won the Supercoppa the previous season. With Allegri now at the helm, Milan has shown more consistent performance, with only two losses in Serie A so far and sitting in second place, seven points behind leaders Inter, following a convincing victory in the derby.
“Allegri is a top coach, both in how he manages the dressing room and his attitude on the field,” added Maignan, who is determined to take Milan back to its rightful place. “I entered this new season with a great desire for revenge; that has been my mindset from the beginning, and it still is.” He reinforced his commitment to the club: “Milan is where I showed myself to the world. I had to come here to understand what it means to wear this shirt. When you play, you feel how great this club is, and I will always be a Milanista.”
With this burning determination and the support of a respected coach, Maignan and AC Milan are ready to face the challenges ahead, in pursuit of redemption and success in both domestic and international competitions.
