Naomi Osaka, one of the most charismatic figures in women’s tennis, made waves following her recent defeat in the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells, where she was overcome by the current world number one, Aryna Sabalenka, with a clear score of 6-2, 6-4. Despite the loss, Osaka made it clear that the experience of competing against the best player on the circuit was invaluable, although she did not hold back in criticizing Sabalenka’s exuberant on-court demeanor, known for her powerful screams.
In the post-match press conference, the 28-year-old player did not hesitate to acknowledge her opponent’s superiority, but took the opportunity to throw in a jab: “It was definitely a tough match, but honestly, the most important thing is that I had a lot of fun. I had never played on Stadium 1 before, and facing the number 1 was really fantastic,” Osaka began.
The Japanese player also commented on the peculiarity of playing against Sabalenka: “I felt like I was playing against her for the first time. Obviously, I had seen her on television, but reality is very different. Sometimes, I felt a bit unprepared because I expected the ball to hit harder, but it wasn’t like that. She emits the same scream for every point. I thought, ‘Oh my God, I was fooled,’” she revealed, with a smile that reflected her lightness of spirit after the match.
Osaka, who has been facing physical issues lately, addressed her current condition with a positive outlook: “I’m 28 years old. I feel like I’ve reached an age where I just need to live each day as it comes. I didn’t win today, but I learned a lot and had fun. The most important thing is that I didn’t get injured. For me, that’s a victory. I’m happy to be able to compete in Miami and I will be seeded there. I’m looking forward to the upcoming Grand Slam tournaments. It’s going to be a fantastic year,” she declared, full of optimism.
And it didn’t stop there. In her usual creative vein, Osaka also let slip a detail about her look: “The leopard has to be present in Miami. We could do something and I could end up in trouble with Nike. As for the outfits, the teams are more or less fixed. It’s like in Australia, Indian Wells, Miami, Europe. We’re just trying to make them a little more fun,” she concluded, promising that bold style will be present in the upcoming competitions.
With a resilient attitude and a vibrant personality, Naomi Osaka continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the world of tennis, promising more excitement for fans in the upcoming stages of the season.
