Samu Costa, the talented midfielder from Mallorca, is dreaming big: his ambition is to join the national team of Portugal for the 2026 World Cup and, who knows, share the locker room with the living legend, Cristiano Ronaldo. In a revealing interview with the EFE agency, Costa, who has already made his mark in Spanish football since his transfer from Sp. Braga, expressed his determination to be part of the squad that will represent the country in the tournament, which kicks off in Houston on June 17.
“I am ready to play as a defensive or offensive midfielder and, if necessary, even as a forward,” declared 25-year-old Samu Costa, emphasizing his versatility and ongoing preparation to join one of the favorites for the world title. For him, the possibility of playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo is more than just a dream; it is an “honor and a pleasure.” The young athlete sees Ronaldo not only as a teammate but as a true “leader, captain, and example” whom he has admired since childhood.
The national coach, Spaniard Roberto Martínez, is about to announce the squad for two friendly matches against Mexico and the United States, scheduled for March 29 and April 1, respectively. Samu Costa hopes to be one of the selections for the competition that will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, from July 11 to July 19. He describes Roberto Martínez as “a different coach and a great person,” highlighting the maintenance of contact, even after not being called up since November 2024.
Within the national team environment, Samu Costa maintains strong ties with players such as Pedro Neto, whom he considers a “childhood friend,” as well as teammates like João Félix and Bruno Fernandes. His football journey began in the youth ranks of Sporting de Braga, but a lack of opportunities led him to move to Spain, where he made a name for himself at Almería before signing with Mallorca in August 2023, a club where he is still under contract for another two years.
At Mallorca, the athlete feels the pressure and responsibility of being a key player in the team, especially at a critical stage of La Liga, where the squad currently sits in 18th place, just one point above the relegation zone. “Attitude and hard work are non-negotiable,” he states, committing to help his club escape the difficult situation it finds itself in.
Regarding his future, Samu Costa does not hide that one of his dreams remains to play in the English league, using his experience in Spain as a springboard for personal and professional growth. While he focuses on the present, he is also open to opportunities that may arise in leagues such as Saudi Arabia or Qatar, stating that “one should not close the door on opportunities, but rather analyze them when they arise.”
With a focused mindset and an ambitious vision, Samu Costa is determined to make his mark both at Mallorca and with the national team, and the possibility of shining at the 2026 World Cup seems increasingly within his reach.
