Naomi Osaka, one of the brightest stars in women’s tennis, made a striking revelation following her defeat to Aryna Sabalenka at the 2026 Indian Wells Open. The loss, with a score of 6-2, 6-4 in the fourth round of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament in California, left an indelible mark on the competition, but what truly caught attention were Osaka’s comments about the Belarusian’s ability to manipulate her through her signature grunt.

During the post-match press conference, the player, currently ranked number 16 in the world, admitted that the experience felt like encountering an unknown opponent. “No, it definitely felt like I was playing against her for the first time. I can watch her on TV, but in reality, it’s very different,” commented the 28-year-old athlete, reflecting on her performance. She further added, “I also feel like I was a bit inattentive at times because I expected the ball to come harder, but it didn’t. She grunts the same way for every ball. I thought: ‘Oh my God, she tricked me’ (smiling).”

Both players, each with four Grand Slam titles to their name, have a rivalry that began in 2018, with Osaka emerging victorious in their only previous match. Sabalenka, now ranked number 1 in the world, demonstrated her dominance on the court, while Osaka struggled to break her opponent’s serve, resulting in three breaks in favor of Sabalenka.

After the match, Osaka not only reflected on the defeat but also on the positive experience she had playing at the famous Stadium 1. “It was definitely very difficult, but my biggest lesson is that I had a lot of fun. I hadn’t had the opportunity to play at Stadium 1, and facing the number 1 in the world was really amazing,” she said.

The Japanese player, who had not competed since January due to an abdominal injury that forced her to withdraw from the Australian Open, expressed optimism regarding her return to competition. “Yes, I think I’m at an age where I need to… I’m 28 years old, and I don’t know, I just need to enjoy each day. Today, obviously, I didn’t win, but I learned a lot and didn’t get hurt,” Osaka said, highlighting her resilience.

Looking ahead, the former world number 1 appeared confident and excited about the upcoming competitions. “I’m happy to be able to play in Miami. I’ll be seeded there. It’s quite different from last year, and yes, I want to continue to perform well. I’m looking forward to all the Grand Slams… it will be an interesting year,” Osaka concluded, leaving fans hopeful for a triumphant return.

With this positive mindset and a new perspective on the game, Naomi Osaka remains a central figure on the WTA circuit, promising more excitement and competitiveness in the tournaments to come.
