After a long absence of 133 days, AC Milan has finally received the long-awaited news about the return of forward Santiago Gimenez to training. The Mexican international, who transferred to the Rossoneri for €35 million from Feyenoord at the start of last year, has been sidelined since the 1-1 draw against Atalanta at the end of October due to a serious ankle injury.
Gimenez, who had a dazzling start to the season, participated in the first nine matches of Serie A, starting in eight of them. However, his journey was abruptly interrupted, resulting in a 19-match absence in the league, as well as not playing in the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana. The severity of his injury led him to opt for surgery in December, raising concerns about his future with the team.
According to information from Gianluca Di Marzio, the forward returned to training with his teammates on Tuesday, following a day off granted by the coach after the victory in the Derby della Madonnina against Inter Milan, who currently sit atop the league. This news is a relief for fans and the coaching staff, who hope Gimenez can reclaim his place in the attack and contribute to the team’s goals for the season.
It is still unclear when the player will be able to return to action in Serie A. Although it is unlikely that Gimenez will be thrown directly into the starting lineup against Lazio next Sunday, there is a possibility that he could be part of the squad, potentially even an option for the home clash against Torino the following weekend.
Currently, the only injury absence in the Milan squad is Ruben Loftus-Cheek, which leaves the team in a relatively favorable position to face the upcoming challenges. Gimenez’s return not only brings hope but also the promise of more dynamism to the Milan attack, which has felt his absence on the pitch. The expectation is that, with a full recovery, Gimenez can return to being the offensive reference that Milan needs for the challenges ahead.
