Fredrik Aursnes, the promising Norwegian midfielder for Benfica, is facing a lengthy period of inactivity that could impact both his club and the Norwegian national team. Following a severe injury to the back of his left thigh during a match against Gil Vicente in Barcelos, Aursnes will be sidelined for four to five weeks, a situation that has caught many fans by surprise.
The initial prognosis from Benfica’s medical team indicated a recovery time of just three weeks, but new information reveals that the player’s rehabilitation will take longer than expected. This change in forecast means that Aursnes will miss crucial matches in the league, including fixtures against Arouca and Vitória de Guimarães. His return may only be possible for the clash against Casa Pia in April, after the international break.
This injury not only jeopardizes his participation with Benfica but also affects the Norwegian national team, which has two friendlies scheduled for the end of this month. Norway will face the Netherlands in Rotterdam and Switzerland in Oslo on the 27th and 31st, respectively. Aursnes, who recently announced his availability to represent the national team again after a two-year hiatus during which he requested not to be called up, will no longer be able to join his teammates.
The national coach, Stale Solbakken, expressed his frustration with the situation, stating: “If he cannot join us in March, we will have to wait until June. We are very happy that he is once again available for the national team.” Aursnes’ absence will be felt not only for the quality he brings to the game but also for the symbolism of his return to the national team.
With the downtime being longer than initially anticipated, Benfica will need to find alternative solutions to maintain the competitiveness of their midfield. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see how the team adapts to this significant absence, while eagerly awaiting Aursnes’ return to action.
