“Frederico Varandas considered irrelevant to justify the severing of relations with Porto.”

The atmosphere of tension between FC Porto and Sporting Clube de Portugal has heated up again, all due to explosive statements made by Frederico Varandas. The Sporting president, in an unprecedented verbal attack, called André Villas-Boas a “liar and a coward.” However, according to sources linked to FC Porto, this disagreement will not lead to a severing of institutional relations between the two rival clubs.

The movement ‘For a Greater, United, Unyielding, and Eclectic FC Porto’ — which includes members of the Superior Council of FC Porto — has raised the alarm, demanding that all relations with Sporting be severed immediately. Miguel Brás da Cunha and Luís Folhadela, representatives of this movement, sent a letter to André Villas-Boas expressing total solidarity, both personally and institutionally, following the provocations from Varandas. This communication is not new; about a year ago, after questionable behavior from Varandas during the funeral of Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, the same request was made.

The ‘Insubmissos’ did not limit their letter to Villas-Boas, but also to António Tavares, President of the MAG and the Superior Council of FC Porto, calling for urgent action. The group emphasizes the need for the Superior Council to show its commitment to defending the values and good name of FC Porto before its members and supporters.

However, the management of FC Porto is not willing to take this path. Sources close to the club’s blue and white management claim that Frederico Varandas does not have the “institutional relevance sufficient” to justify a break in relations. An official decision in this regard would be merely symbolic and would have no practical repercussions. Varandas’ statements, according to the same source, are seen as a “smokescreen” intended to divert attention from the underlying reality of André Villas-Boas’ words.

What is clear is that the rivalry between the two clubs remains fierce, and fans are increasingly attentive to the movements of their leaders. The tension intensifies as each side throws its provocations, but will FC Porto really ignore the demands of its own fans? The answer to this question could define the future of relations between these two powerhouses of Portuguese football.
