In the heart of the battle for the Premier League, Arsenal emerged victorious in Brighton with a narrow 1-0 win that solidifies their position at the top of the table. The star of the match was undoubtedly Bukayo Saka, whose early goal was enough to secure the three points and extend the Gunners’ lead to seven points over their rivals.
The match began with a scare for the visitors, as David Raya, celebrating his one hundredth game in the Premier League, made a miscalculation by handing possession to Carlos Baleba just three minutes in. The Brighton midfielder attempted an audacious lob, but Gabriel displayed great defensive presence and managed to deflect the ball, preventing what could have been a disastrous start for Arsenal.
The Gunners’ response was quick and effective. In the ninth minute, Jurrien Timber, on a play down the right flank, found Saka. With a skillful touch, Saka cut onto his left foot and fired. The shot, although not very powerful, took a slight deflection off Baleba that confused goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, allowing the ball to find the back of the net. A goal that not only gave Arsenal the lead but also dealt a psychological blow to Brighton.
After the goal, Brighton took control of possession, trying to create opportunities through Georginio Rutter and Diego Gomez, while Kaoru Mitoma looked threatening before halftime. However, clear goal-scoring chances were scarce, as Arsenal, often conservative after scoring, failed to establish significant dominance and even failed to win a corner in the first half.
In the second half, coach Fabian Hurzeler brought on Yankuba Minteh in an attempt to add more dynamism to Brighton’s attack. The pressure increased, and Rutter tested Raya with a well-placed shot, forcing the goalkeeper into an important save. Jack Hinshelwood also had a good opportunity, but the ball went just wide of the goal, heightening the anxiety among Brighton supporters.
With substitutions taking place for both teams, including the introduction of Danny Welbeck, who faced his former club, Arsenal had a few chances to extend their lead. The clearest of these came when Kai Havertz saw his shot deflected for a corner by Verbruggen, keeping the Gunners’ slender advantage intact.
As the referee signaled seven minutes of stoppage time, Brighton pushed for an equalizer, but Arsenal’s solid and determined defense held firm, securing a crucial victory. This result not only boosts the team’s morale but also places them in a strong position in the title race, making Arsenal appear stronger than ever this season.
