The defeat of Liverpool against Wolverhampton, the bottom team in the Premier League, caused deep discontent in Reds legend Steven Gerrard. In a sharp analysis after the match, Gerrard did not hold back in his criticism of Jurgen Klopp’s players, who left Molineux with a 2-1 loss, a result that left fans questioning what is happening with the team.

“During 65 minutes, Liverpool was desperate tonight, really weak,” Gerrard stated while commenting for TNT Sports. The frustration of the former captain was evident in his words, highlighting a performance that left much to be desired. “They didn’t play with the right tempo, the right quality,” he added, emphasizing the lack of intensity that characterized the team’s display.

One of the focal points of Gerrard’s criticism was the substitution of Rio Ngomoha, who, according to him, “is doing more in a brief appearance than (Cody) Gakpo in 65 minutes.” Gerrard argued that young Ngomoha deserves a chance in the starting eleven, stating that “(Slot) should start the kid on Friday night.” This statement reveals not only dissatisfaction with some players but also a renewed hope in the youth of the team.

Gerrard also commented on the ease with which Wolverhampton controlled the game, stating that “the Wolves were very comfortable, they contained Liverpool quite well.” His criticism of the team’s defensive performance was sharp, particularly regarding the goals conceded. For the first goal, he highlighted that “it was a basic ball to the target man; they have a two-on-one there, and that has to be dealt with.” Regarding the second goal, he pointed out a mistake by goalkeeper Alisson: “It was a bad ball from the goalkeeper and there was no reaction.”

For Gerrard, if Liverpool has ambitions to progress in the FA Cup, the defense needs substantial improvement. “They say ‘we weren’t good enough in the final third,’ but they also need to defend better,” he concluded, making it clear that the responsibility does not rest solely on the attack.

Gerrard’s analysis not only reflects his passion for the club but also the urgency for a response from the team, which now faces a crucial challenge in the next round. What will Klopp do to correct the mistakes and restore confidence? The answer may very well dictate Liverpool’s future in this competition.
