After a convincing 1-0 win in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Taça de Portugal, Frederico Varandas, president of Sporting, did not hold back in his criticism of his counterpart at FC Porto, André Villas-Boas. In a statement filled with irony and sharpness, Varandas declared that he sees the president of the dragons “very afraid” and insinuated that he seems to not even know that he is in charge of the club. This exchange of barbs has further ignited the rivalry between the two clubs, shining a spotlight on the tensions that permeate Portuguese football.

Varandas did not hesitate to respond to Villas-Boas’s provocations, who had interrupted a press conference held by Rui Borges, stating that the former coach should know more about respect in sports. “He was a coach and knows that there is generally respect. They want to build the narrative,” Varandas asserted, emphasizing that Villas-Boas’s unease stems from his team’s performance, which, according to him, is not up to par to compete for the title. “He looks at the field and sees what I see; he believes his team is not good enough to be champions. This is his fear; they are playing poorly,” he added, in a provocative tone.

Tensions escalated when Varandas mocked Villas-Boas’ threat that FC Porto would file a complaint against Luis Suárez due to a controversial gesture at the end of the match. “The handball coach has already faced a criminal charge for throwing a water bottle. This is the narrative,” Varandas said, suggesting that Villas-Boas’ concerns are unfounded and that the situation is being manipulated to divert attention from the shortcomings of the Porto team.

“What bothers Villas-Boas is Suárez’s effectiveness. He plays a lot and scores many goals. It’s a nuisance,” Varandas stated, defending the player and questioning the logic behind potential sanctions. “If he is punished, I want to see how many games a club should have for influencing referees or for giving orders to ball boys to remove balls from the field,” he fired back, emphasizing his indignation.

Furthermore, Varandas did not hold back in criticizing the management ethics of FC Porto, calling Villas-Boas a “liar” and stating that “neither he nor his friends have the ethical dimension to be leaders of FC Porto.” The Sporting president highlighted that the rival club is using tactics to influence refereeing, questioning why a club issues statements whenever referees are mentioned. “Which club conditions? The team that is strong and will be champions does not do that. He is very afraid. He is a coward,” he accused.

Finally, Varandas praised the behavior of Sporting fans during the classic match, stating that they showed how to welcome a rival. “There were no fireworks, the FC Porto players slept very well, they had rest. Everyone was treated with all the dignity, as it should be,” he concluded, reinforcing the image of a Sporting that stands out for its attitude and respect in sports. The rivalry between Sporting and FC Porto continues to heat up, promising more intense chapters in the upcoming clashes.
