The new era of Manchester United is underway, and the focus is now on strengthening the wings, even after a player purge under the direction of Ruben Amorim. Former player and now coach Michael Carrick made it clear that the Old Trafford club is looking to make signings for the left-wing position, a significant shift after the dismantling of a squad that previously boasted several options.
In the rich history of Manchester United, the wings have always been the beating heart of the team. Legendary names like George Best, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo are not just memories but icons that have shaped what it means to be a footballer at the club. Carrick, in mentioning the need for a winger, evokes that heritage and the strategic importance of this role on the field.
At the start of last season, United had five experienced players on the wings, with a total investment of £173 million in Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Amad Diallo. However, the situation has changed drastically. Sancho is now on loan at Aston Villa, following a brief stint at Chelsea, and his future at Old Trafford seems increasingly unlikely. His signing in 2021 by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was intended to position him on the right wing, but the player has made it clear that his preference is to play on the left.
Antony, another name that generated expectation, left the club to join Real Betis in a £21.65 million deal, while Alejandro Garnacho transferred to Chelsea for £40 million. Marcus Rashford, who also stands out on the left wing, had a tumultuous period under Amorim and ended up being loaned to Barcelona, which has a £26 million purchase option. However, sources close to the player indicate that there is still no agreement and negotiations are expected to continue, especially considering that Rashford still has two years left on his contract with a salary of £325,000 per week.
With Amad as the only traditional winger available, Carrick has been exploring other options, including Patrick Dorgu, a former Lecce player adapted as a winger. Although the future manager of the team has yet to be defined, Carrick claims that his decisions are aimed at the long-term benefit of the club. When asked about the need for a specific reinforcement on the left wing, Carrick was straightforward: “I am always analyzing the balance of the team and the squad to ensure maximum flexibility. It is definitely something to consider.”
Carrick is not alarmed by the current situation, stating that he still has alternatives. “We can be dangerous,” said the 44-year-old coach. “Matheus [Cunha] has been playing in that position and causing a lot of problems. When he plays on the wing, it’s complicated to stop him one-on-one.” However, Cunha prefers to play more centrally and does not limit himself to the touchlines.
Among the young talents, James Scanlon, an international from Gibraltar, has been a regular presence in the under-23 team, but is now on loan at Swindon, while under-20 England international Shea Lacey made a significant impact in three games, although he has been used less following a red card in January.
Most fans of Manchester United do not question the departures of Sancho or Antony, but the majority believe that Amorim could have handled Garnacho’s situation differently. The search for new wingers is therefore not only a matter of necessity but also a reflection of the club’s ambition to regain its identity and historical strength on the flanks. The question everyone is asking now is: who will be the next to wear the iconic red jersey and leave their mark in the history of Manchester United?
