Barcelona put on an impressive display, but their journey in the Copa del Rey came to an bitter end. Despite a convincing 3-0 victory over Atlético de Madrid, the Catalan team was unable to overturn the heavy 4-0 defeat suffered in the first leg of the semi-finals. The ambition of the culés was high, but the reality is that the dream of a comeback faded into frustration.
The goals of the night were scored by Marc Bernal, who stood out with two goals at the 29th and 72nd minutes, and Raphinha, who also made his mark by converting a penalty in the 45+4 minute. Barcelona’s pressure was overwhelming, but what seemed like a possible recovery turned into an exercise in impotence. Atlético, who had dominated the first match with a memorable performance, maintained their solid defense, resisting the opponent’s advances.
The Spanish team, looking for their 11th Copa del Rey, has not won it since the thrilling final in 2013 when they defeated Real Madrid. The first half of the match in Madrid was a nightmare for Barcelona, who saw Eric García score an own goal, followed by goals from Antoine Griezmann, Ademola Lookman, and Julián Alvarez. With that colossal disadvantage, Barça entered the field determined to score quickly and turn the tie in their favor.
In the opening minutes, Barcelona’s pressure was intense. Fermín López and Ferran Torres, on two occasions, failed to hit the target, and frustration began to build. However, it was Marc Bernal, after a beautiful play by Lamine Yamal, who opened the scoring, putting the culés in the lead. Hope shone once again, but Atlético did not let themselves be discouraged and nearly equalized with an opportunity from Griezmann, who missed.
The first half was marked by an emotional turnaround: Pedri was fouled in the area, and Raphinha was called to convert the penalty, increasing the lead to 2-0 before halftime. With morale high, Barcelona returned for the second half determined to score a third goal and level the tie. João Cancelo had a great opportunity, but his finish was ineffective.
Finally, the reward came in the 72nd minute when Bernal scored again with a header following a cross from Cancelo, putting Barcelona just one goal away from leveling the tie. However, despite the constant pressure and several attempts to score, the 3-0 remained unchanged. The dream of a comeback faded as time went on.
With the tie decided, the focus now shifts to the next match, where Real Sociedad will face Athletic Bilbao in search of the other spot in the final. The grand final of the Copa del Rey is scheduled for April 25 at the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville, where Atlético de Madrid hopes to secure the coveted trophy. Barcelona, for its part, will need to reflect on what went wrong and prepare for the challenges ahead in the league and future competitions.
