The clock is ticking: there are only 100 days left until the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026, and the excitement is palpable! The head coach of the United States men’s national team, Mauricio Pochettino, is preparing to call up the 26 players who will represent the country in the tournament. The pressure is immense, and the selection of players is a true puzzle that few would dare to attempt to solve. However, as the days draw closer, a clearer picture begins to emerge of the team that could take the field.

“Getting into Pochettino’s head is dangerous,” comments Alexi Lalas, who has made his predictions about the starting lineup of the national team. Lalas, who was initially skeptical about Pochettino’s methods, now observes an evolution in the team’s playing style and expresses renewed optimism about the team’s future. “I am much more appreciative and excited about what this team can achieve,” he states.

When it comes to the goalkeeper position, Lalas does not hide his feelings about keeper Matt Freese. “I am not swayed by the idea that he is the best goalkeeper in U.S. history. No way. But at this moment, he is the player who has shown the most consistency and confidence under Pochettino’s leadership,” he reveals.

Defense is another crucial point for the team. Lalas projects Chris Richards, Tim Ream, and Miles Robinson as the pillars of the defensive line. “Richards is well-positioned, and Ream, whether on the left or in a central position, will be fundamental in distributing the play,” he explains. “Robinson completes the defense, although there are a considerable number of players who could also be called up. The difference is minimal, but this is the choice I believe Pochettino will make.”

In the midfield line, Lalas highlights the speed of Sergino Dest and Antonee Robinson, who should be pushed into more advanced positions. “With Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie, we have a powerful combination. McKennie, due to his development, will have the freedom to interact with the forwards,” he states.

And, of course, one cannot talk about the attacking front without mentioning Christian Pulisic. “He will start on the left, but he can float wherever he wants,” says Lalas. Together with Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman, the offensive line promises to bring excitement and dynamism to the game. “I want to give McKennie the opportunity to explore the field and create chances, while Balogun remains the primary option up front,” he concludes.

The stage is set for a World Cup that promises to be historic for the United States. As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on Pochettino and his team, eager to see if his choices will lead the US to a memorable performance. The countdown has begun, and the nation is ready to cheer with every goal and every play.
