Bruno Fernandes has been the beacon for Manchester United, and his exceptional form since being repositioned in attacking midfield by interim manager Michael Carrick has not gone unnoticed. The Portuguese international, who recently celebrated his 31st birthday, faced uncertainties about his future before the start of the season but chose to remain at Old Trafford, a decision that fans are surely applauding.

Fernandes revealed that he rejected a colossal offer to move to the Middle East, and that choice has proven to be the right one. At the beginning of the season, he had to adapt to a new role, playing in a deeper position alongside Casemiro. Despite this change, he managed to maintain his influence on the pitch, being one of the few bright lights for the team during the turbulent period under Ruben Amorim. After 14 months filled with difficulties, Amorim was replaced, and Carrick quickly implemented a new 4-2-3-1 formation, where Fernandes shines as the number 10.

Since returning from a muscular injury at the beginning of the year, Fernandes has been in devastating form. In his last match at the iconic Theatre of Dreams, his performance against Crystal Palace was nothing short of masterful. He not only scored a goal but also assisted Benjamin Sesko for the winning goal in a hard-fought 2-1 victory. This match marked the 18th time the midfielder has both scored and assisted in a single game, a feat that only Wayne Rooney (35) and Ryan Giggs (22) have achieved more often in the club’s history.

The statistics speak for themselves: Fernandes has already recorded seven goals and 14 assists in 27 matches across all competitions this season, all of which have been as a starter, except for one. As a result, he leads the assists table in the Premier League and is the leading candidate for the Creator of the Season award. Furthermore, the Portuguese player is eyeing the record of 15 assists set by David Beckham in the 1999/00 season, the highest number achieved by a United player in a single campaign.

His remarkable performance has not gone unnoticed by Gary Lineker, the English football legend, who gave an enthusiastic praise to Fernandes during the podcast “The Rest is Football.” Lineker did not hesitate to call the Portuguese midfielder “player of the season.” He stated: “We see him playing on the left wing, on the right wing… what a brain! For me, he is the player of the season. I know they will probably give the award to someone who wins something.” The former striker continued to praise Fernandes, highlighting his resilience even during the team’s difficult moments: “He was the standout player even when they were going through a bad phase under Ruben Amorim. He has a great football brain and technique. What a player, what a player!”

With a combination of talent, intelligence, and resilience, Bruno Fernandes is not only a pillar of Manchester United, but also one of the most intriguing and influential players in the Premier League. The expectation that he may yet surpass the achievements of past greats, like Beckham, makes his future even more exciting for football fans and critics alike.
