The defeat of Nottingham Forest against Brighton last Sunday left coach Vitor Pereira reflecting on the lessons to be learned from a match that turned into a missed opportunity. The final score of 2-1, with all goals scored in the first 15 minutes, revealed an alarming fragility in the team’s approach during the first half. Pereira did not hesitate to point out the lack of energy that compromised his side’s performance.

“It was a very difficult first half,” Pereira admitted, visibly frustrated. “To press the way we want, we need energy. In the first half, we tried to press as if we had a tank full of fuel.” This lack of synergy in pressing was one of the factors that allowed Brighton to exploit the spaces left open by the Forest defense, which ultimately resulted in two opposing goals.

The coach emphasized that the team appeared disjointed, pressing individually rather than collectively. “We learned that we need a trigger to press together. We thought we had enough energy for that, but that was not the case,” he lamented. The inability to defend adequately against an opponent like Brighton proved costly, with Pereira acknowledging that the team conceded spaces they could not afford to.

After Brighton’s goal, Nottingham Forest reacted and managed to equalize the match, but their defense continued to show vulnerabilities. “They (Brighton) prepared in seven days, while we only had three. They tried to press us and we couldn’t find the right spaces to play,” Pereira explained about the difference in preparation between the two teams. Brighton’s second goal came from a mistake that could have been avoided, further worsening the situation.

In the second half of the game, Pereira made tactical adjustments that resulted in a significant improvement. “We changed the system in the second half. We didn’t concede anything to them and we had one or two opportunities,” said the coach, emphasizing the need to learn from the mistakes of the first half.

However, the feeling of loss was palpable. “We lost an opportunity to earn points. We must focus on this game, as the next one is against Manchester City; we need to recover, rest, and prepare to face them, without thinking about the future, because we don’t know what can happen,” Pereira stated, reflecting on the importance of each game in the fight for survival in the Premier League.

With this defeat, Nottingham Forest now faces a monumental challenge in the next round, where the pressure to achieve positive results will increase. The message is clear: it’s time to learn from mistakes and prepare for a battle that could define the course of the season.
