Shane Lowry, the charismatic Irish golfer, is making waves at the Cognizant Classic, and he does not hesitate to credit a curious factor: the absence of world number one Scottie Scheffler. After three thrilling rounds, Lowry finds himself in a strong position to claim his fourth title on the PGA Tour. What has happened over the last 54 holes? Let’s uncover it!
During the post-round press conference, Lowry had no trouble making a light-hearted remark about Scheffler’s absence from the competition. “Scottie doesn’t play much here in Florida, maybe,” he commented. “I just like Florida golf. When I moved here, I hated Florida golf, the grain, the Bermuda. Everything was complicated for me. But, living here and spending time, I’ve improved a lot.”
Scheffler, who has been a dominant force this season, did not participate in this tournament, but is already preparing for the Arnold Palmer Invitational next week, after an impressive start to the season, including a win at The American Express and a third-place finish at the WM Phoenix Open. In his last tournament, the Genesis Invitational, he finished in 12th place.
Lowry’s focus is now completely on winning the Cognizant Classic. The Irish golfer, who has not won a tournament since 2024, when he teamed up with Rory McIlroy to triumph at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, is in excellent form. After an opening round of 70, he followed up with a 67 on Friday to secure his place in the tournament. On Saturday, he shone with a bogey-free round, carding an impressive eight birdies and taking the lead.
“My goal going out today was to secure a spot in the last two groups for tomorrow,” Lowry confidently stated. “I want to be close to the leaders, to see what they are doing. If the conditions are similar tomorrow, there will be opportunities for low scores, so someone could come from the middle of the pack.” He gave an honest assessment of the challenges posed by the course: “It’s not easy to lead on this golf course. There are a lot of difficult shots. But yes, I’m where I want to be. I’ve had some opportunities to win this tournament before, and I hope to convert them tomorrow.”
Lowry’s journey in the 2026 PGA Tour season began at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he excelled with rounds of 67, 69, 67, and 67, finishing T8. At the Genesis Invitational, he placed 24th, but his rise at the Cognizant Classic promises an exciting conclusion.
What awaits us in the final round, scheduled for Sunday, March 1? Will Lowry be able to maintain his lead and secure the coveted trophy? The world of golf is closely watching the unfolding of this magnificent sporting spectacle.
