Victoria Mboko, a rising star in the world of tennis, is set to make her much-anticipated debut at the Indian Wells Open. The excitement surrounding the young Canadian is palpable, and former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard is among those who believe Mboko is ready to make a significant impact at this prestigious WTA 1000 event.

Just a year ago, Mboko was ranked 188th in the world, still carving out her path on the ITF Circuit. Her breakthrough came at the Porto Women’s Indoor tournament, where she showcased her dominance by defeating Harriet Dart with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 in the final. This early success laid the groundwork for her meteoric rise in the rankings.

After receiving a wildcard, Mboko made her WTA 1000 debut at the Miami Open, reaching the second round before taking her first steps in Grand Slam tournaments at Roland Garros. However, it was her performance at home during the Canadian Open last August that truly highlighted her potential. She became only the second wildcard in history to win the title, defeating top players such as defending Roland Garros champion Coco Gauff and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, culminating in an impressive victory over four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka in the final.

This remarkable journey propelled Mboko into the top 30 of the WTA Rankings. A few months later, she claimed her second title at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Open, finishing the year within the top 20 after starting the season in the lower ranks of the standings.

With the start of the new year, Mboko continued to demonstrate her quality, opening the season with a second place at the Adelaide International and a solid campaign that took her to the fourth round of the Australian Open. Her impressive run continued as she reached a second WTA 1000 final at the Qatar Open, solidifying her status among the elite by entering the top 10 of the rankings.

Bouchard, who once reached the world No. 5 after her own memorable campaign at Wimbledon in 2014, is confident about Mboko’s potential. “She just broke into the Top 10 and has already reached two WTA 1000 finals, winning my home tournament in Canada last summer,” Bouchard said in an interview with Tennis Channel. “On the way to Indian Wells, I truly believe the sky is the limit!”

At the Indian Wells Open, Mboko will be the number 10 seed, with Aryna Sabalenka, another heavyweight competitor who finished as the runner-up against Mirra Andreeva in 2025, leading the draw. Sabalenka, a champion of four Grand Slam tournaments, comes off a hard-fought defeat in the final of the Australian Open against Elena Rybakina and chose not to participate in the Qatar Open or the Dubai Tennis Championships. Renowned coach Paul Annacone expressed curiosity about Sabalenka’s emotional and competitive state following recent challenges. “The world number one had an excellent Australian Open, but suffered a tough loss in the final against Elena Rybakina and has not competed since, missing the Middle Eastern tournaments in Doha and Dubai,” he noted. “I’m curious to understand how she is emotionally, as well as the level of her tennis.”

As the Indian Wells Open approaches, all eyes will be on Victoria Mboko, who is looking to solidify her status as one of the biggest emerging talents in the sport. With the support of established players like Bouchard and an impressive journey so far, the young Canadian is preparing for a tournament that could further elevate her rising career.
