In April 2025, the golfer began to experience a persistent cough, which led him to consult a specialist. After a PET scan, the diagnosis was devastating: “I found an alien living in my chest. I didn’t know what it was. I had to have a biopsy. I found out it was cancer,” Pate revealed in a touching Instagram post.

Despite the adversity, Pate remains active on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, where he recently competed in the 2026 Chubb Classic, finishing T70. Through his struggle, he is not only seeking to overcome cancer but also aims to achieve his first victory on the circuit after turning 50. “It’s all about support,” Pate said, acknowledging the importance of community as he continues his sporting journey.

Throughout his career, Pate has won six titles on the PGA Tour before joining the Champions Tour in 2011. Since then, he has achieved 18 top-10 finishes, including a second place, but has yet to secure the victory he desires. In 225 PGA Tour Champions tournaments, Pate made the cut in 219 of them, missing the opportunity to compete on weekends only six times.
