The world of football is in shock following the horrific incidents of racism that marred the recent Champions League clash between Real Madrid and SL Benfica. The young Brazilian prodigy Vinícius Júnior was subjected to racial abuse during the match, and the reaction from FIFA was swift. FIFA President Gianni Infantino issued a strong statement on his social media, expressing his deep sadness and outrage at this unacceptable incident.

Infantino did not hold back in describing his reaction to what happened in Lisbon. “I was shocked and saddened to see the alleged racist incident directed at Vinícius Júnior in the UEFA Champions League match between SL Benfica and Real Madrid CF,” he stated on his social media. The message makes it clear that racism has no place in either sport or society. “We need all stakeholders to take action and hold those responsible accountable,” he added, emphasizing the urgent need for action.

Infantino’s statement comes shortly after UEFA expressed its own disappointment with the events. The FIFA president took the opportunity to remind of some initiatives that are in place to combat racism in football, even though the effectiveness of these measures in the Spanish league has been questioned. “At FIFA, through the Global Anti-Racism Initiative and the Players’ Voice Panel, we are committed to ensuring that players, officials, and fans are respected and protected, and that appropriate actions are taken when such incidents occur,” explained Infantino, underscoring the importance of a safe and equitable environment for all.

In addition, Infantino praised the performance of referee François Letexier, who, by activating the anti-racism protocol with an emblematic gesture, demonstrated a firm and decisive stance in the face of the situation. “I thank the referee for acting exemplary by interrupting the match and addressing the issue,” he commented.

Finally, the FIFA president reaffirmed the support of the football community for Vinícius Júnior, emphasizing that the fight against racism is a non-negotiable priority. “FIFA and football express total solidarity with the victims of racism and any form of discrimination. I will continue to reiterate: No to racism! No to any form of discrimination!” Infantino concluded, making it clear that football must be a space of inclusion and respect, where diversity is celebrated and protected.

This incident not only shocks but also serves as a warning to the football community. The fight against racism needs to be a constant priority, and Infantino’s words are a call to action for everyone involved in the sport to unite against discrimination. The message is clear: change starts now, and everyone has a role to play in this battle.
