Amid a storm of controversy, Benfica has taken a firm and decisive stance in defense of its player Gianluca Prestianni, accusing Real Madrid and forward Vinicius Jr. of a “defamation campaign” following allegations of racism that emerged during an intense clash in the Champions League. The situation took a dramatic turn when Vinicius claimed to have been the target of racial insults from Prestianni, prompting UEFA to appoint an inspector to investigate the matter.
During the second half of the match, which had to be interrupted for an impressive 11 minutes, Vinicius reported to referee Francois Letexier that he had heard a racist comment. The UEFA’s three-step protocol against racism was activated, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Not only Vinicius but also some of his teammates, including Kylian Mbappe, corroborated the accusation, stating they heard Prestianni make the offense while covering himself with his shirt after the Brazilian celebrated his goal in front of Benfica fans.
In response to the accusations, Prestianni defended himself, claiming that the Brazilian forward misinterpreted him. “I have never been racist towards anyone, and I regret the threats I have received from the Real Madrid players,” the player stated on his Instagram account. Vinicius, for his part, made a strong statement: “Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to put their shirts over their mouths to show how weak they are.”
With the second match of the Champions League clash scheduled for next Wednesday in Madrid, the pressure on UEFA to review the evidence is palpable. Benfica has expressed support for UEFA’s investigation and reiterated its defense of Prestianni. In an official statement, the club stated: “Sport Lisboa e Benfica views the actions announced today by UEFA, following the alleged racism incident that occurred in the match against Real Madrid, with a spirit of total collaboration, transparency, openness, and clarity.”
The club also emphasized its unwavering commitment to the values of equality, respect, and inclusion, which are fundamental to its identity and have Eusebio as its greatest symbol. “Benfica reiterates that it fully supports and believes in the version presented by player Gianluca Prestianni, whose conduct while serving the club has always been guided by respect for opponents, institutions, and the principles that define Benfica’s identity. The club regrets the defamation campaign of which the player has been a victim.”
In the mixed zone after the match, Mbappe did not hesitate to confirm the seriousness of the situation. “He [Prestianni] put the shirt here and said ‘monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey.’ I heard him say that, and some Benfica players also heard it, and then everything you saw started,” stated the French forward, leaving no room for doubt about what he witnessed.
As the investigations progress, tension continues to rise, and both Benfica and Real Madrid are preparing for a clash that now transcends the pitch, raising profound questions about racism and responsibility in football.
