“Goodbye worries: Mac Allister stays at Liverpool, says Romano.”

Liverpool fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief, as Fabrizio Romano addressed the rumors that emerged on Monday suggesting a shocking transfer of Alexis Mac Allister to Manchester United. Speculation began when the Mirror reported that officials at Old Trafford were considering acquiring the Reds’ midfielder, with the club’s co-owner, Jim Ratcliffe, expressing interest in signing the player should he become available.

Currently, 27-year-old Mac Allister has around two and a half years left on his contract at Anfield, earning a salary of £150,000 per week, which is surpassed by only seven of his teammates, according to Capology. However, as the night went on, Romano used his YouTube channel to clarify the situation surrounding the player and Manchester United, stating that Liverpool fans have no reason to fear a massive transfer to their rivals.

The experienced Italian journalist highlighted that he “has no knowledge of anything really concrete or strong” regarding this rumor, while predicting that Manchester United will be “very, very busy” in terms of midfield recruitment during the summer. He mentioned names such as Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, and Sandro Tonali as valued targets at Old Trafford but advised that a clear strategy can only be defined after the appointment of a permanent manager and the resolution of the fight for Champions League qualification.

Although rumors about Manchester United‘s interest in Mac Allister have emerged from a widely recognized source, it is practically unthinkable to imagine Liverpool selling any player to their biggest rival, especially a key player who was one of the highlights in securing the Premier League title last season. To make matters worse, just two weeks ago, Mac Allister’s father, Carlos, reaffirmed that the Reds’ number 10 is “very happy and comfortable” in Merseyside, in response to speculation about potential interest from Real Madrid in the 2022 World Cup winner.

Like his team as a whole, the 27-year-old player has struggled to regain the high levels of performance from the 2024/25 campaign, leading to some calls for him to be dropped from the starting eleven. However, he showed significant improvement in the 3-0 victory over Brighton last weekend. Mac Allister has participated in all the Premier League matches he has been available for this season, starting in all but four of them, which demonstrates the importance Arne Slot places on his talent. The mere idea of selling such a valuable player, especially to a fierce rival, would send many Reds fans into a panic.

As Romano pointed out, there are still many uncertainties to be resolved at Old Trafford before the club can properly outline its next steps in the transfer market. Therefore, Liverpool fans can relax, as a bid from Manchester United for Mac Allister is extremely unlikely.
