On Saturday, Ajax delighted their fans with a convincing performance, defeating Fortuna Sittard 4-1 in the Eredivisie. The star of the night? A Belgian trio that left no doubts about their capabilities, scoring all the goals for the Amsterdam team. However, the match did not start well for Ajax: Oleksandr Zinchenko’s debut, having arrived from Arsenal, was short and bitter, as an injury forced him off the pitch just six minutes after the opening whistle.
“I saw my debut ending before it really started,” lamented Zinchenko, who was replaced by Jorthy Mokio. However, the young substitute did not disappoint: just one minute after his entry, Mokio cleverly opened the scoring, finishing off a smart play following a quick free kick taken by Kasper Dolberg.
Ajax did not stop there. In an excellent start to the game, Rayane Bounida, who kept Oscar Gloukh out of the starting eleven, made it 2-0 in the 14th minute, placing the ball in the left corner of Luuk Koopmans’ goal. Ajax’s pressure continued, and in the 24th minute, Mika Godts, the team’s top scorer, netted the third goal with a curled shot that capped off his earlier assist to Bounida. This achievement made the Belgian trio the first since the 2006/07 season to score all the goals in a single match.
However, Fortuna Sittard did not go down easily. Dimitris Limnios took advantage of a gap in Ajax’s defense, crossing for Josip Sutalo, who ultimately deflected the ball into his own net, dealing a blow to the team’s morale. Dolberg, who had been searching for his first league goal in nearly a month, came close to extending the lead but saw a header hit the crossbar and a goal disallowed for a foul.
The second half was more relaxed for Ajax, who controlled the match with confidence. Oscar Gloukh, who came on for Davy Klaassen, had the opportunity to score but found no one to finish a pass right in front of the goal. Tension momentarily increased when Kaj Sierhuis, a former Ajax player, had a chance to score but sent the ball over the crossbar at a crucial moment for Fortuna.
The home team’s joy was quickly restored when Godts, two minutes after Sierhuis’s miss, scored the fourth goal, taking advantage of an assist from Wout Weghorst and firing into the back of the net. With this victory, Ajax finally secured a win in February, following a series of draws, and temporarily climbed to third place in the table, awaiting the result of NEC in their match against Sparta Rotterdam.
With a performance that combines talent and strategy, Ajax proved that they are ready to return to the title race, while the Belgian trio stands out as a force to be reckoned with in the Eredivisie.
