The controversy surrounding the Players Championship is heating up, and Billy Horschel’s remarks about the inclusion of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau in the prestigious tournament at TPC Sawgrass are only adding fuel to the debate. The player, who is one of the most renowned today without having won a major title, expressed his bold view on the event, stating that winning the Players is, for him, as significant as triumphing in one of the four major golf tournaments.

Horschel, the 2014 FedEx Cup champion, acknowledges the difficulty of asserting oneself at TPC Sawgrass, but does not hesitate to classify the Players Championship as an elite event. In an interview with Trey Wingo, the golfer did not shy away from sharing his opinion: “I’m going to say something, people are going to be on opposite sides. One thing I haven’t done is win a major in my career. And I believe I will. For me, if I win the Players Championship, I will consider that a major.” Horschel’s passion for the competition is palpable, and he is unafraid that his statement might generate criticism. “That’s my opinion. It doesn’t have to be everyone’s. Some people are going to criticize me for that, others may agree.”

For Horschel, the Players Championship is much more than a competition; it is a pillar of the community and the PGA Tour. He argues that the big names of LIV Golf, such as Jon Rahm, Cam Smith, and Bryson DeChambeau, should have the opportunity to participate, stating, “I think that needs to be fixed, in my opinion.” The golfer, who has lived in the area since his youth, emphasizes the importance of the event for the Florida community and for all those who work hard behind the scenes of the PGA Tour.

However, the possibility of LIV Golf stars attending the Players Championship seems increasingly remote. Rahm, Smith, and DeChambeau have opted not to return to the PGA Tour through the members’ return program, an opportunity taken by Brooks Koepka. Although last year brought hopes of an agreement between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia that could allow LIV players to participate, those discussions have not progressed.

The expectation was that, as the tournament approached, LIV players would be invited. Tiger Woods even hinted that an agreement was close during the Genesis Invitational. However, these promises turned out to be empty, reaffirming that, in the current landscape of professional golf, nothing can be considered guaranteed.

Thus, as the Players Championship draws near, Horschel’s words resonate fervently, not only as a defense of the tournament but as a call for the inclusion of all the best players, regardless of their affiliation. The tension between the two golf entities continues to grow, and the Players Championship promises to be a stage for heated discussions and unresolved rivalries.
