“24-year-old tennis player under protection after receiving frightening death threats.”

The world of tennis is in turmoil following a series of disturbing death threats that have raised concerns about player safety and the integrity of the sport. Argentine tennis player Román Burruchaga, just 24 years old, has become the center of a storm of tension at the Challenger in Rosario, where he received alarming threats that involve not only his life but also the safety of his family. The revelations are breathtaking and expose a dark reality that haunts the sport.

Burruchaga, ranked 118th in the world, reported receiving threats ahead of his semifinal match against Taiwanese player Chun-Hsin Tseng. The intimidation came through WhatsApp messages sent from an international number, prompting Burruchaga to file a complaint at the 17th Police Station in Santa Fe. The content of the messages was directly linked to gamblers attempting to manipulate the outcome of the match, demanding that the player lose convincingly.

The threats were explicit and terrifying. One of the messages read: “Son of a b****, today you must lose against the Chinese player.” Another message escalated the gravity of the situation, stating: “We have enough weapons to silence you and your family. Don’t be smart. Play well, lose without winning a set, and everything will stop here. Otherwise, I promise you won’t leave Rosario.” Furthermore, the messages contained personal information about his family and even a photo of a gun, raising immediate concerns about the player’s safety.

Authorities wasted no time and quickly launched an operation to protect Burruchaga, increasing security measures for both the player and the tournament venue. The prosecution took over the investigation, analyzing screenshots and all the material received. So far, those responsible for the threats have not been identified.

Amid this unbearable pressure, Burruchaga managed to overcome the challenges and won his semifinal with a score of 6-3, 6-3. However, in the final against Camilo Ugo Carabelli, he ended up losing, with a result of 6-2, 6-3, in an event that featured a total prize pool of $225,000.

Unfortunately, Burruchaga is not the only one facing such threats in the world of tennis. In August 2025, player Elina Svitolina revealed that she had received abuse and death wishes from gamblers following a loss. British player Katie Boulter also spoke out, stating that threats of this kind have become “the norm,” with many coming from frustrated gamblers upset with their bets.

Concerns about player safety have further escalated with another incident at the Rosario Challenger. Spanish tennis player Nikolás Sánchez Izquierdo, 26, also received serious threats from gamblers before his match against Argentine Valerio Aboian. The situation forced organizers to delay the match by nearly two hours, which ultimately took place without an audience.

Sánchez Izquierdo found himself caught in a spiral of fear, receiving threatening messages that forced him to report the situation to the ITF and subsequently to the police. He withdrew from the doubles match scheduled for that night and, in a statement on Instagram, expressed his distress: “For years, I have endured verbal abuse on social media, just like other players. Given the seriousness of the recent threats, from now on, I will have zero tolerance and will report any kind of excessive message that shows a lack of respect or threatens me or my family.”

With the rise of these incidents, the issue of betting-related threats has become an increasing concern in tennis. Authorities and governing bodies are facing growing pressure to address a crisis that is casting a shadow over the sport. It is an urgent call for security measures and the integrity of the game to be reinforced, ensuring that players can compete without fear.
