Padraig Harrington has once again surprised the world of senior golf by winning the U.S. Senior Open for the third time, becoming the first player to win this event in consecutive years since 2006. At 54 years old, the Irishman not only took home a prize of $800,000 but also reinforced his status as a star both on the greens and in the digital realm, where his instructional videos on YouTube are followed by around 204,000 subscribers.
The achievement took place at the Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, on July 5, when Harrington sealed the victory with a final round of 66 strokes, four under par. The Irishman started the final round one stroke behind Stewart Cink and one ahead of George McNeill, but quickly gained the upper hand, reaching the third hole already three strokes ahead of Cink and four ahead of McNeill. From there to the finish, he expertly managed his lead and added another trophy to his impressive collection, which already includes two British Opens and a PGA Championship.

The impact of Harrington goes far beyond the golf course. His online presence, particularly through instructional videos on YouTube, has made him a reference point for amateurs and fans who can't help but thank him, even during competitions. “Hey Paddy, thanks for the tips on YouTube,” shouted a fan as Harrington walked down the fairway of the fifth hole. Known for his approachable style and unmistakable Irish accent, Harrington is seen as one of the most charismatic players on the circuit, always ready to offer advice, even when not asked.
On this aspect, Harrington explained, after his victory, the pleasure he feels in challenging preconceived ideas: “I am the youngest of five siblings. I tend to be contrary. There is nothing that gives me more satisfaction than telling someone they are wrong,” he confessed, laughing. “That’s why I enjoy telling someone they are bad at chipping: ‘No, actually you should lift your head when you chip, not keep it down.’ Everyone looks at me like, ‘What?’” Still, he emphasized that the main reason for creating videos is to help: “I like trying to make people better. I like the idea of transforming someone’s world in golf. I find it interesting.”
Harrington admitted that he cannot help but give advice when he sees someone playing: “If you make eye contact, you’ll get a lesson,” he joked. However, he acknowledged that not everyone appreciates his spontaneity: “I’ve had people tell me – even after giving them the right lesson – that I ruined their game. It wasn’t me. So, I have to be careful because some people don’t want to be taught. Unfortunately, I get into that a lot. It’s not for money. It’s just for fun.”
Stewart Cink himself, who finished second and was under Harrington's pressure during the tournament, highlighted the contagious energy of the Irishman: “I was going to say that golf instruction videos are boring, but what Padraig does is not boring because he is funny. He’s not trying to be funny. He just is, because he’s so enthusiastic. And people like that,” Cink stated.
Despite his passion for videos, Harrington remains focused on high performance, aware that the window to win on these stages is beginning to close: “I’m realizing that there’s a period to win these tournaments,” he admitted. “I’ve been told by other players that it’s until you’re 56 or 57 years old, and then it starts to decline rapidly.” But for now, the Irishman celebrates a historic achievement, alongside Miller Barber, as the only three-time champion of the U.S. Senior Open, proving once again that he knows how to play – both online and live.
