Geny Catamo, the talented Mozambican winger from Sporting, is making a grand return following his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Although he missed his team’s last five matches, Catamo has proven to be a key player, and his market value couldn’t be higher. His performance in Morocco, where he contributed two goals and an assist that helped Mozambique reach the quarter-finals, has attracted interest from clubs across various European leagues.

The news doesn’t stop there: Catamo, who is preparing to resume competition with the Lions, is also in the spotlight when it comes to transfers. With a contract that runs until June 2028, Sporting’s management is considering a renewal that could extend the deal until 2030, along with a salary increase and an adjustment to the release clause, which is expected to rise from the current €60 million to €80 million. The player, who has already received offers from Fenerbahçe and Aston Villa, could be a crucial piece in Sporting’s quest for a third consecutive championship, but the club’s management is vigilant for offers that may come in the next transfer window.

The situation is clear: Catamo is on the “market showcase,” and the starting point for any negotiation is a proposal of €20 million. The January transfer window promises to be lively at Alvalade, not only due to the potential departure of the young winger but also because of the club’s intention to strengthen the squad. Interest in Catamo is not limited to English football; other major European leagues are also keeping a close eye on the player.

Since signing his first professional contract with Sporting in September 2020, coming from Amora, Catamo has shown continuous growth. After loan spells at V. Guimarães and Marítimo, it was at the beginning of the 2023 season that he managed to convince coach Ruben Amorim to remain in the first-team squad. The Sporting board recently invested 2.25 million euros to secure 90% of his rights, a clear sign of the confidence they have in the player.

In addition to his skills on the field, Catamo’s presence at the Africa Cup of Nations has elevated his profile, and the positive impact he had on the Mozambican national team could be decisive for his club career. With his return to training with Sporting, the focus now shifts to the upcoming match against Casa Pia, scheduled for Friday, where Catamo will have the opportunity to demonstrate his worth once again and continue to attract interest on the international stage. The saga of Geny Catamo, one of the biggest prospects in Mozambican football, is far from over, and all eyes are on Alvalade.
