Mikel Arteta found himself at the center of a media storm following a controversial incident involving forward Gabriel Martinelli and Liverpool defender Conor Bradley during the goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium. The play, which left many questioning the sportsmanship of the Brazilian player, sparked a wave of reactions both on and off the pitch, testing Arsenal’s resilience in the Premier League title race.

The critical moment occurred in the closing stages of the match when Bradley, after an awkward fall, was visibly injured and ended up leaving the field on crutches. Martinelli, seemingly unaware of the seriousness of the situation, kicked the ball in the direction of the Liverpool player, which provoked outrage from the visiting team’s players. The match referee did not hesitate to show cards to Martinelli and Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté in response to the ensuing chaos.

In statements to Sky Sports, former player and commentator Roy Keane did not hold back in his criticism, calling Martinelli’s action “a disgrace.” However, Arteta defended his player. “Knowing Gabi, he is an incredible and lovely guy. He probably didn’t realize what was happening. I hope Conor is okay; I will speak to him to understand the situation. Probably, (Martinelli) didn’t recognize the seriousness of what was going on,” said the Arsenal manager.

On the other hand, Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed concern over Bradley’s injury. “We fear the worst for Conor Bradley. We don’t know yet, but he had to be carried off on a stretcher. We will have to wait for the tests to see the severity of the injury,” he commented. Regarding Martinelli’s behavior, Slot highlighted that the pressure of the game may have influenced his decision. “You can’t expect Martinelli to think clearly in the 94th minute. I’m sure that if he knew the severity of the injury, he would never have acted that way.”

As for the match, Arsenal had a dominant first half but failed to create significant goal-scoring opportunities. Liverpool, in turn, saw Bradley hit the crossbar in one of the few clear chances of the first half. After the break, Slot’s team put in a stronger performance, but the lack of finishing continued to be a chronic problem.

When asked about the possibility of it being a missed opportunity to increase their lead in the table, Arteta acknowledged that every time they don’t win, it’s a chance slipping away. “Yes, every time we don’t win. But then we would be 12, 15, or 20 points ahead. I have to praise the team and the players individually for what they did during this Christmas period. The demands and the schedule are incredibly difficult. What they have achieved is remarkable. Coming out of this period, with all the problems we faced, in the strong position we are in, is an achievement that deserves recognition,” Arteta concluded.

With the draw, Arsenal remains at the top of the Premier League, now with a six-point lead, while rival teams such as Manchester City and Aston Villa also drew in the same round. The tension and drama on the pitch continue to be the usual backdrop in the title race, and the incident involving Martinelli and Bradley only adds another chapter to the season’s narrative.
